Hi All,
I have a question from a colleague here in Orange
County (CA) that I'm sure many of you might be able to answer in
more detail than I could. I've cc'd Dr. Dorman so you may
respond directly, or if you email me I'll forward on the responses.
Thanks,
Tim Brazill.
Here's the question:
I am a psychologist with the Orange County Health Care Agency. I work
with children's mental health (I'm also a Professor at Alliant
International University- formerly USIU and CSPP). I work with various
community organizations related to children's mental health, including
the prop 10 commission, Head Start, and am on the advisory group for
some of CSUF's extended ed. programs. Anyway, in my work with the
community I am intrigued by the differences in the different ethnic
communities within Orange County, and particularly how these might be
related to child health and mental health outcomes. One of the outcomes
of interest to me in the mental health area is child abuse and neglect,
which is quite low in the Asian community (5% vs 14% of the population).
This may reflect underreporting, but it also may reflect a more cohesive
network around the issues of family and child rearing, which influences
neglect (I'm not sure about abuse - the two measures are always lumped
together). I'm interested in whether some measures of social capital,
related to family networks would show correlational results that might
suggest differences that lead to lower rates of abuse and neglect. I am
aware of measures that ask questions such as could you borrow money from
a relative? if you were sick who would take care of your child? etc. and
I wonder if through network analysis and measurement of social capital
in different ethnic groups in the county we could identify
characteristics related to less abuse and neglect. I have no money,
though I am willing to search for funding and also to try to recruit
some students who might want to do this kind of research. Are either of
you interested in this? If not, do you know some local researchers who
might be? Are there already data on this of which I am not aware?
