I agree, Louise. We are currently working on the Innovation Systems Research
Network Cluster project here in Canada - analyzing regional innovation. We have
a number of interview templates and guides (according to organization/actor
type) that we use to gather BOTH qualitative and quantitative data/info. We
are targeting 25+ regions across Canada involved in 9+ industries. My own
thesis work involves taking this data and combining it with SNA to develop a
model for knowledge flows (codified and tacit) within the Saskatoon, SK region
(primarily biotechnology and ag biotech industry).
Would welcome the opportunity to dialgue with anyone a bit more on this...

Hi Graeme,
I am currently working on a research project about the role of social capital
in regional innovation systems. I am also doing some network analysis - but as
well am using some qualitative methods because I am dealing with a complex
context-specific concept that I don't really think can adequately be analysed
without a series of in-depth interviews of regional actors.
For what it is worth, I would suggest that you complement your SNA with some
interviews, or even conduct your interviews first to identify key elements.
Kind regards,
Louise
