I will be teaching an interdisciplinary course, "Women of Color," this
summer. Though my background is history, I am offering students the option
of conducting online surveys, evaluating respondents' data, and writing
analytical survey reports on any topic of interest relating the course.
This means that most students will take approaches other than history.
Anyway, I found a web site, Survelum, at http://www.survelum.com, that
students (and even I) can handle without any problems. Surprisingly the only
cost with this site is a $20 fee to activate the survey! The fee is cheaper
than the books that I plan on assigning. :-) The other features--the
creating, the editing, the testing, the sign-up, the unlimited sign-in, the
gathering of statistics, and the collected data to download--are free! The
web site is very user friendly, designed for anyone who want to create and
control their own online surveys. So I am comfortable with the online
survey taking. And I think students will enjoy conducting surveys online.

My most important concerns have to do with getting students to write good
focused survey questions. I need your ideas to show to students the range
of topics that they can use to shape into good survey questions that
especially connect gender and race or ethnicity with other subjects. What
are burning questions or issues in your field or on this listserv that weave
gender and race/ethnicity? I want students to create online surveys that go
beyond the usual questions of demographics. Do you have ideas or questions
relating gender and/or race/ethnicity?
