Learning Skills Specialist in the Academic Resource Center
The Academic Resource Center, in the Division of Student Services, announces
an opening for a Learning Skills Specialist. The Academic Resource Center
provides and promotes services that enhance student learning skills,
strategies, and attitudes. Center programs provide academic support as well
as opportunities for students to develop teaching, leadership and
professional skills. The Center's comprehensive services and programs
directly enhance a student's experience from the time of entry to the
university and throughout their academic career.
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of the Academic Resource Center, the
Learning Skills Specialist provides direct services to students seeking
academic support, teach study strategies courses, and help coordinate,
develop, and implement programs under the ARC. This will include the
Connections program as well as any first year student programs housed under
the ARC. All programs and services are assessed, monitored and evaluated and
each staff member participates in this process.
Responsibilities:
Conduct in-depth assessments of students seeking academic support and in
conjunction with the student, develop academic strategies to improve their
success.
Collaborate with faculty, student services offices, and staff to implement
academic support plans for students.
Teach a minimum of one section of Psy 1730 each semester.
Provide support for ARC program development, which may include training and
supervision of student peer advisors, tutors, or SI leaders.
Plan for and conduct learning strategies workshops for students and staff as
requested.
Assist in the promotion of ARC services to students, staff and faculty.
Assist in the planning and development of Connections and other first-year
programs.
Develop and maintain assessment procedures for all services, programs and
classes.
Continue to update and develop professional skills in the field of learning
assistance.
Required Job Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, student development, or other
appropriate discipline with 3years of teaching experience at a secondary
level. Masters degree preferred.
Ability to present clear and concise information both oral and in written
form.
Strong interpersonal, collaborative skills.
Working knowledge of word processing systems, database software.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
Demonstrated at least two years professional experience in working with
students in academic or student service program areas at a university,
community college or in the field of adult education.
Ability to develop, plan and organize academic assistance programs for
individuals and groups. Experience in coordinating the delivery of services
to students and in selecting, training, and supervising students.
Minimum of two years experience teaching in higher education.
Proficiency with desk top publishing, web development, and design.
