RE: PUBLIC GUEST LECTURE ON SUDAN CRISIS
Special Adviser to the President at the International Crisis Group (ICG),
John Prendergast, will be speaking on October 7, 2004 at 7:30 pm in Room
1002 of the New Physics Building on the UF campus. His lecture will address
the crisis in Darfur, Sudan, which is his specialization at ICG, an
independent, multinational, think tank based in Washington, D.C.. The event
is sponsored by the UF International Center and the Transnational & Global
Studies Center. Admission is free and open to the public. For more

Mr. Prendergast has devoted the past 20 years to visiting and studying the
most violent war zones in Africa. Prior to joining ICG, Mr. Prendergast was
a Special Adviser to the U.S. State Department focusing on conflict
resolution in Africa. He also was Director of African Affairs at the
National Security Council and has worked for a variety of think tanks, UN
agencies and NGOs in Africa and on African issues, including the U.S.
Institute of Peace, Human Rights Watch, and UNICEF. He is the author of
seven books on Africa, including ICG's latest book on Sudan, God, Oil &
Country: Changing the Logic of War in Sudan, as well as its new book on
southern Africa, Blood and Soil: Land, Politics and Conflict Prevention in
Zimbabwe and South Africa. His lecture, "Genocide in Our Time: The Crisis
in Darfur, Sudan," will address the growing violence in Africa and the
shaping of U.S. foreign policy towards African war zones.
The UF International Center, established in 1991, assists faculty, staff,
administrators, and students in pursuing and developing international
activities and initiatives. Through its International Speakers Program, the
UF International Center encourages discussion and debate on campus and in
the community. Past speakers include former CIA analyst Ray McGovern and
David Ballard, Director of the Office of Foreign Press for the U.S. State
Department.
