Dear Netters,

Greetings from snowy Toronto. Does any one know of studies/ conceptual papers comparing and contrasting "status" with "reputation"? Podolny 1993 (AJS) says that status is a signal of quality. But then he also says that certain actions of a firm, like partnering with firms of lower status, reduce a firm's reputation, which in turn would negatively affect this firm's cost/revenue profile. So, he seems to distinguish in one way or another between these 2 terms (status vs rep) , but I don't seem to be able to get my head around this.

Somewhere I heard that status and reputation could be distinguished as stock and flow of perceived quality. My status could be high (stock) but reputation is low (flow). Let's say a reputable person of high status starts doing something bad over and over again. For a while his/her status would remain high, but he/she would get bad rep for the actions which eventually would lead to his/her reduction in status. Could this be a distinction?
