I was recently looking over the Fiske Guide to Colleges, a large book providing data on American universities to help students decide what schools they might want to attend. One piece of data provided for each school is a set of application overlaps. These take the form of: Students who applied to University A also applied to University C, University H, University J, and University K. These data seem conceptually identical to the Amazon book-purchasing data, which have been used in some forms of network analysis ( http://www.baconizer.com/ , http://www.orgnet.com/divided.html ). I was wondering if anyone knew of any previous work on mapping linkages between universities based on commonalities of application patterns, either scholarly articles or "Bacon-type" websites. I've done some computer searching (on Sociology Abstracts and on Google), but haven't found anything. Whether I used the optimal keywords, I don't know. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
