Attention all Ham Radio operators:
Several of you have expressed interest in providing emergency
communications. Please review the AREC - Amateur Radio Emergency
Communications plan for the North Florida Section.
I have placed a copy of the AREC plan on the GARC Web site here:
The primary communications purpose is to maintain contact with the Alachua
County Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
We may have flooding (10-12" of rain), severe weather with winds > 58 mph,
and possible tornadoes.
Several shelters are on stand-by to be opened Friday in Alachua County.
Already traffic is backed up on I-75 with thousands of people evacuating.
areas along the east coast of Florida.
At UF, two shelters may be opened as needed for students, faculty, and
staff who may need to evacuate--mostly those who live off campus.
Shelter Status information can be obtained from the State Emergency
Operations Center (SEOC) online via this link:
More information will be provided tonight on the Amateur Radio Emergency
Services (ARES) net on the 146.820 repeater with 146.985 as backup. The
net begins promptly at 8:00 pm.
At UF, I would like GARC operators to consider a time that you would be
available and for how long. Operators may be needed for the one or two
shelters, at the UF EOC at UPD headquarters, and at the club station.
Operators should expect to stay overnight, but if you can't work that long
or if you need relief, please advise your availability. That way relief
operators can be informed so they can catch a late afternoon nap before
reporting for overnight duty.
Bring your own snacks, drinks, notepad, pen/pencil, extra batteries,
flashlight, and such. Create a "go-kit" for emergency communications.
Ideas can be found in the ARRL's Emergency Communications manual
If you would like to follow the Hurricane Net on HF, please read this
article from the ARRL:
Also, we will have a "Station Night" tonight from 7-10 pm to review
emergency operating procedures, and remove the G5RV antenna to prevent it
from being damaged, and if enough people come, perhaps install the rain
gauge for the weather station.
