UF preparing for Hurricane Frances

With the emergency planning for Hurricane Charley a recent experience,
the University of Florida is making early preparations in anticipation of
the potential arrival of Hurricane Frances. Although the hurricane.s path
is not yet certain at this time, university officials are tracking the
storm carefully and are advising the university community to monitor both
the storm.s progress and be alert for official messages regarding
university activities.
The university actively works cooperatively with local and state
agencies to plan and prepare for all types of major emergencies and
disasters. If it is necessary to activate shelters for Hurricane Frances,
two Category 3 hurricane-impact shelters have been designated at UF at the
Reitz Union.s new ballroom and the Southwest Recreation Center. These
shelters have appropriate building construction, protective systems and
mass-care capabilities to provide a safe haven in Category 3 hurricanes.
The shelters are intended primarily for use by the university.s off-campus
students, faculty, staff and their families should a storm impact the
local area, but all seeking shelter would be welcome. The shelters are
operated as American Red Cross-managed shelters assisted by university
staff and volunteers.
If there is a decision to close the university, classes will be
suspended and UF will close, and all persons will be expected to leave the
campus except those designated essential personnel and resident students.
Visitors to the campus will be informed through the news media, or through
communication with hotels and UF culture/sporting venues.
All university personnel will be encouraged to monitor WRUF-FM 103.7
and WRUF-AM 850 radio for official emergency information in Alachua
County. As any hurricane begins to threaten Florida.s coastline, persons
should access updates at UF.s home page at www.ufl.edu or University
Digest, www.napa.ufl.edu/digest. As a situation develops, new information
will be posted on the UF home page along with helpful links about the
storm.
Links on the university.s Web site provide useful
hurricane-preparation tactics, information and tracking sites. UF.s
natural disaster plan is located at http://www.ehs.ufl.edu/disasterplan/.
