ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUCEMENTS
1. Library Orientations:
Free library orientations all held in Marston Science Library, L-107. No
registration needed. All subject areas covered. Bring Gator-1 card.
Monday, January 10, 10:40-11:30am. Tuesday, January 11, 11:45am- 12:35pm.
Wednesday, January 13, 11:45am-12:35pm. Thursday, January 13,
12:45-1:30pm.

2. Financial Affairs Office Announcements:
UF Office for Student Financial Affairs (SFA) Spring Information From
January 3-14 SFA will be open 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. Switchboard
hours will be 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. On Monday, January 17, SFA will be
closed for Martin Luther King's birthday. Normal office hours, 8 a.m. to 5
p.m., and normal phone hours, 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., will resume January
18. Financial aid applications and Gator Aid Application Guides for the
2005-06 academic year are available at SFA in S107 Criser Hall. Students
should check the SFA Web site to be sure they have completed all steps to
ensure proper disbursement of spring financial aid, including student
loans: www.ufsa.ufl.edu/sfa/. Students can check the status of their
financial aid on ISIS: www.isis.ufl.edu/.

3. Registrar Announcements:
January 4 - 7, 2005: Drop/Add & Late Registration.
January 7, 2005 (by 11:59 p.m.): Deadline to Drop or Withdraw from
      Spring Courses w/o Fee Liability.
January 14, 2005 (by 3:30 p.m.): Spring Fees Due.

ENHANCING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE
4. SCHOLARSHIP: NSEP Scholarship for Study Abroad:
The Institute of International Education (IIE) is now accepting
applications for the 2005-2006 National Security Education Program (NSEP)
Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for study abroad. NSEP Boren
Scholarships provide funding for summer, semester, or yearlong study in
areas of the world that are critical to U.S. national security, but are
underrepresented in study abroad. IIE encourages interested students to
visit www.iie.org/nsep to learn more about the program and begin the
application process. The campus representative is Susanne Hill, UF
International Center, Grinter 123. All applications must be completed
online. The national deadline is February 10, 2005, the internal UF
deadline is January 15th, 2005.

5. SCHOLARSHIP: William E. Simon Fellowship for Noble Purpose
The Fellowship is an unrestricted cash grant that will be awarded to those
graduating college seniors who have demonstrated passion, dedication, a
high capacity for self-direction, and originality in pursuit of a goal
that will strengthen civil society. Each year ISI will award three
Fellowships for Noble Purpose. The top award will be for $40,000. Two
additional fellows will be chosen each year to receive a grant of $5000
each. Interested students must email name, address, and phone number to
[log in to unmask] by December 15, 2004, and applications must be postmarked by
January 15, 2005. More information and applications at

6. SCHOLARSHIP: Udall and Beinecke Deadlines in January
Two national prestigious scholarships are available to undergraduate
students at the University of Florida, both with campus nomination
deadlines in January 2005. Go to the Honors website to learn more about

7. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: Leisure Courses
Leisure Course Registration begins January 3, 2005 @ 10am. Online

8. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: UF Distance Ed Courses:
Need Courses to Fit your Spring 2005 Schedule? Consider taking a UF
Distance Education course! Over 160 undergraduate course sections are
available in a variety of academic areas. These courses are official UF
college credit and are automatically included on UF transcripts and degree

9. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: Research in Biomedical Sciences:
NIH has many excellent opportunities for students pursuing a PhD. in the
biomedical sciences. Check out their website about University-NIH

10. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: Summer Research Program at MUSC:
Medical University of S.C. offers research-stipends of about $3,000 for a
10 week period to students who are considering a research career in the
basic sciences. MUSC has many areas for students to focus their research.

11. ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: Mayo Clinic Undergrad Summer Research:
The Mayo Clinic is accepting applications for its Summer Undergraduate
Research Fellowship (SURF) Program. Each year, 70-80 undergraduate
students from around the United States come to Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota, to work beside both young and established scientists on a broad
range of biomedical research questions. Up to ten fellowships also are
available at Mayo`s campuses in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jacksonville,
Florida. The program begins May 31, 2005 and ends August 5, 2005. See

12. SERVICE: Sign-up for Breast Cancer Walk:
In October 2005 Avon and Susan G. Komen will be hosting its famous 60 mile
3-day walk in Tampa. Fellow gator, Jennifer Ortiz will be walking and

13. OPPORTUNITY: Help Desk Job:

15. OPPORTUNITY: Junior Honors Medical Program Info. Session:
JHMP information session is scheduled for January 12 in room C1-11, at
5:15 .The applications will be available there (if you cannot attend, you
can pick up an application on the 13th or thereafter). To save time on
the preliminary application have an official transcript in hand (in an
envelope), one that includes fall grades.

16. OPPORTUNITY: Florida Cicerones Forum:
The Florida Cicerones and Student Alumni Association will be holding their
Spring Rush Forum Tuesday, January 11th from 6 - 8 PM at Emerson Alumni
Hall (across from the stadium). Florida Cicerones are the Official
Ambassadors of the University of Florida. They represent UF at a variety
of events, including those with the Alumni Association, Athletic
Association, and President's Office as well as giving campus tours.
Membership in Florida Cicerones and SAA provides many benefits, and a
chance to give back to the University of Florida. Attend the forum if you
are interested in learning more. Refreshments will be provided. Contact

17. OPPORTUNITY: ACCENT Applications Available:
Don't miss your opportunity to be part of the nation's largest student run
speaker's bureau, ACCENT! Applications for all positions available
beginning on January 4. Pick up and drop off in the Student Activities
Center on the 3rd floor of the Reitz Union and applications are DUE NO
LATER THAN FRIDAY JAN. 14, at 3pm. Please read instructions for

18. OPPORTUNITY: Mortar Board Honor Society:
Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society will be excepting

19. LEADERSHIP: Team Captain for intramurals:
Interested in playing intramural soccer or basketball this semester?
Interested in a leadership position as a team captain? The captain of
each team is required to attend a captain's meeting at the start of the
semester. The captain's meeting for soccer will be on Monday, January 10
at 6:30 p.m. in the Rion Ballroom. The basketball captain's meeting will
be on Wednesday, January 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rion Ballroom.

20. EVENT: Art Show at "The Gallery"
"the gallery" at the J. Wayne Reitz Union at the University of Florida is
pleased to announce the opening of Singular Joy & Fleeting Madness:
Paintings by Rachel Gibas. This colorful show will consist of 50 paintings
by Rachel Gibas. The exhibition will run from January 4-14. The opening
reception will be held on Friday, January 7 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. "the
gallery" is located on the second floor of the J. Wayne Reitz Union and is
open weekly Monday- Thursday from 9:00am - 9:00pm and Friday- Sunday from

22. EVENT: Campus Diplomats info session:
Looking to get involved? Help personalize the university through
inclusive programming and an active presence on campus by becoming a
Campus Diplomat! Attend our information session Wednesday, Jan. 12 at 6
p.m. in the Broward Hall basement to learn what we do as ambassadors to
the Dean of Students office. Applications are available on the Campus

23. EVENT: Free Improv Comedy Show:
Theatre Strike Force, the nation's largest collegiate improvisational
comedy and sketch troupe, will be having their annual main stage
performance at the Constans Theatre. They will be performing Thursday,
Friday, and Saturday (January 6-8) at 8 PM. Admission is FREE. The show
will feature improv games like those seen on the television show "Whose
Line Is It Anyway," and sketch comedy as seen "Saturday Night Live." Get
there early, because last year over 200 people were turned away at the
