ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. LIBRARY ORIENTATION
Come to the Marston Science Library, room 107, for free orientations to
the UF Libraries, open to all students & faculty. No registration needed.
Bring Gator 1 card to use computers. Aug. 31, 1:55-2:45 pm; Sept. 1,
10:40-11:30 am; Sept. 6 11:45 am - 12:35 pm; Sept. 8 12:45-1:30 pm


ENHANCING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE

2. RESEARCH: National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow Workshop
September 7, 6:00 PM, 282 Reitz Union. Food and refreshments for the first
50 participants. Application deadlines: November 2 (Life Sciences),
November 3 (Psychology, Mathematical Sciences), November 4 (Social
Sciences), November 7 (Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy), November 8
(Engineering), and November 9 (Computer and Information Science and
Engineering and Geosciences). For more info on these scholarships see

3. LEADERSHIP: Student Government Announcements
Student Government is hosting its second yearly Weeks of Welcome open
house today from 12pm to 4pm on the third floor of the Reitz Union. Come
meet SG officers from all the SG branches and pick up applications for the
many available positions. Refreshments will be served.

Students can qualify to run in this Fall's Student Government Elections
September 1 and 2 in Reitz Union room 346, and September 6 in Reitz Union
room 288 from 9am to 5pm. Contact Daniel Maland at [log in to unmask]
with inquiries.

The Freshmen Leadership Council is a prestigious Student Government
organization which provides freshmen students with an opportunity to
network within Student Government, meet influential student leaders, and
learn how to get involved on campus. Applications for the council are
available in the Student Government office on the 3rd floor of the Reitz
Union and are due by 5:00pm September 7.

4. LEADERSHIP: Savant UF Directorship Applications
This is a great way to get involved and meet accomplished UF leaders. You
do not have to be a savant UF member. The application describes the
various Directorships offered and can be picked up at the Savant desk on
the third floor of the Reitz Union. Application deadline is September 9.

5. LEADERSHIP: Residence Hall Week Staff and Directors
Interested in putting on a large concert event, running a video game
tournament, creating a semi-formal casino extravaganza or bringing the Big
Easy Mardi Gras to UF? If so applications are available for Residence
Hall Week staff and directors at http://www.ufrhw.org/. Application
deadline is September 12.

6. LEADERSHIP: Preview Staff 2006
Apply to be a member of the 2006 Preview Staff! Serving on Preview Staff
is both a unique honor and rewarding opportunity to further develop your
leadership skills, build invaluable relationships with fellow staffers,
faculty and staff and make meaningful contributions to your Gator
community. Please visit www.dso.ufl.edu/nsp for selection information, a
position description and an application. Application deadline is
September 22 at 4:30pm in P202 Peabody Hall.

7. INTERNSHIPS: UF Intramurals Hiring Interns
UF Intramurals hires over 300 Soccer, Football, Volleyball, Softball and
Basketball officials and scorekeepers every semester. Pay is $7.25/hr and
all you have to do is visit http://ufrefs.com/signup.php to sign up!
Students only, please.

8. INTERNSHIPS: Museum University Student Educators (MUSE)
The University of Florida's Harn Museum of Art is looking for students
with an interest in art and a desire to create innovative museum programs
to serve as one-semester interns. The Fall 2005 MUSE program will focus
on interactive program design and contemporary art. Previous experience
in art is not necessary, and non-art related majors are encouraged to
apply. Join us at the museum September 1 at 4:00pm for a casual and
social information session.

9. INTERNSHIPS: O'Connell Center Business & Faculty Interns
Students from any college are encouraged to apply. All interns must be
computer literate, have a positive demeanor and a strong desire to learn.
All internships are non-compensatory for the first 24 hours. For more
information on internships at the O'Connell Center, please contact Renee

All internship application deadlines fall on September 16.

10. SERVICE: Getting Involved in Your Community
The Center for Leadership and Service and Gamma Eta Sorority present
"Getting Involved in Your Community the Whys and Hows" August 31, 7pm at
the Health Professions, Nursing and Pharmacy Building Room G312.

11. SERVICE: After School Gators
Want to make a difference in a child's life? Then volunteer with After
School Gators, an organization that works with at-risk elementary school
children in local, public after school programs. To get involved attend
one of the orientations, all held in Reitz Union Room 282: September 1,
7-8pm; September 8, 7- 8pm; September 14, 8-9pm; or September 15, 8-9pm.

12. OVERSEAS STUDY: UFIC Study Abroad Scholarships
Students studying abroad for the entire spring semester 2006 are eligible
for scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000. Students must submit an
essay, two letters of recommendation, and recent transcript with the UFIC
Scholarship application form (available to download from the Financial Aid
section of Study Abroad Services at the website: www.ufic.ufl.edu).
Application deadline is September 15.

13. OPPORTUNITY: Pre-Health Advising
Please stop by the Pre-Health Advising Office at the Academic Advising
Center to get answers to any questions or concerns you may have. For
application & re-application questions, stop by:
- August 31, 10:30-11:30am, Room 202 AAC
- September 2, 10:30-11:30am, Room 202 AAC

14. OPPORTUNITY: Fulbright Information Session
Graduating seniors and graduate students who want to do research or other
projects overseas can learn about successful strategies to receive a
prestigious Fulbright award Friday, September 9 at 2 pm in 219 Dauer Hall,
the Ruth McQuown Room. The Fulbright campus application deadline at UF is
September 26, 2005; students should access the on-line application
directly through the website at www.fulbrightonline.org, where there is
more information about the program and the specific country guidelines.

15. GET INVOLVED: Student Involvement Consultations and Organization Fair Sponsored by IDEAL
September 7, 4:30-7:30pm, Reitz Union Room 123 Consultations are geared
toward students that want to get involved but don't know where to start.
IDEAL consultants will help students find organizations that interest them
September 7 from 4:30-7:30pm in Reitz Union Room 123.

The Fall 2005 Student Organization Fair will take place September 14th and
September 15th at the J. Wayne Reitz Union Colonnade. Applications for
organizations are currently available at the IDEAL office, room 308 of the
Reitz Union. Please return completed applications by 5pm September 9th.

EVENTS

16. EVENT: Homecoming Parade Applications
Applications to participate in the 82nd annual Homecoming Parade to be
held October 7 are now available for UF Student Organizations.
Applications can be found on the Homecoming website,
http://www.ufhomecoming.org, or on the 3rd floor of the Reitz Union at the
information desk or in the Florida Blue Key Office (Room 312).
Application deadline is September 7. Submit to the Florida Blue Key
office, or via email to [log in to unmask]

17. EVENT: Off-Campus Student BBQ
Come out to Lake Wauburg this Saturday, September 3rd at 1:00pm! FREE
hamburgers, hotdogs, veggie burgers, and all the fixings will be
provided...do not forget to bring you Gator ID for admittance to the Lake.

18. EVENT: Museum Nights
Are you looking for something fun to do on Thursday nights? Come on out to
Museum Nights! The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Harn Museum
will be open late from 5 to 10pm and free refreshments and beverages will

19. EVENT: Gator Growl Auditions
Gator Growl 2005 will hold auditions for its annual Talent Night September
7 from 2 to 7pm in Reitz Union rooms 361-362. Auditions will be held for
anyone possessing a unique talent but solo vocalists, group performers and
comedians are the most commonly auditioned acts. The winner of the solo
vocalist competition will sing the national anthem at Gator Growl 2005.

20. EVENT: Jewish Student Union Welcome Week
All events are free and open to the public. Free food at all events.
September 6 - Swamp Kickoff Social, 9-12midnight, Swamp Restaurant.
September 7 - Hillel Open House (located at 2020 W. University Avenue), 8-11pm FREE PIZZA!!!
September 8 - Bowling @ Reitz Union, FREE CAKE!!!
September 9 - Shabbat services @ Hillel, 7pm, FREE dinner to follow.

21. EVENT: ACCENT and the Asian American Student Union Present Jack Ong
Jack Ong, an American-born Chinese actor, writer and Asian American
activist speaks Thursday, September 1 at 6:30pm in the University
Auditorium. His visit is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:00
p.m. Ong serves as the executive Director of the Dr. Haing S. Ngor
Foundation; the primary mission of the Foundation is to develop programs
fostering diversity and multicultural understanding through education and
outreach.

22. EVENT: Showcase Essentials
Have you started your internship of full-time job search? Learn how to
market yourself to employers at Showcase Essentials, and then meet
employers at Career Showcase. Attend one or all of the workshops between
your classes September 14-16 in Reitz Union 362. Check
