ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.  SUMMER 2005 DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES:
Take a UF course from anywhere - these courses are official UF college
credit and are automatically included on UF transcripts and degree
tracking. Enroll today: www.distancelearning.ufl.edu/undergrad/.

2.  FINANCIAL INFORMATION:
Consolidate Your Student Loans NOW to Lock in a Low Interest Rate. The
Federal Direct Consolidation Loan program allows students to combine one
or more federal educational loans into a new loan that offers locked-in,
low-interest rates. The current fixed rate of 2.875% on student loans
borrowed since 1998, the lowest in history, will rise on July 1, probably
to over 4%. Bills now in Congress may eliminate the fixed rate option.
Continuing or graduating UF students (enrolled or in your loan grace
period) who have a variable rate Stafford Loan should also consider
applying. Apply by July 1 to lock in the current low rate. For more

3.  REGISTRAR ANNOUNCEMENTS:
ADVANCE REGISTRATION FOR SUMMER/FALL 2005: Advance registration for
Summer/Fall 2005 will continue through April 14. Check Registration
Preparation Information on ISIS at http://www.isis.ufl.edu.

CLASSES END: April 20

READING DAYS: April 21 and April 22

EXAMS: April 23 through April 29

Final Grades Available: May 2 in the evening on ISIS


ENHANCING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE

4.  CAREER RESOURCE CENTER ANNOUNCEMENT:
Thinking of a career in Education? The Career Resource Center is hosting
Education Recruitment Day, April 19, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm in the Grand
Ballroom. More than 35 school districts and education organizations will
attend. Stop by to explore career opportunities or interview. A list of

5.  INTERNSHIP: American Heart Association:
The American Heart Association's Gainesville office is offering internship
and volunteer opportunities for UF students. We are looking for a few
self-motivated, energetic, responsible and creative students to work in
our volunteer-based office. Students will have the opportunity to
participate actively in the daily operations of our office, work directly
with local businesses & volunteers, create communication pieces and be a
part of the production and promotion of our special events: 2005 Heart
Walk and the 2006 Heart Ball. If you are interested in this great

6.  SCHOLARSHIP: Fulbright Orientation Session:
Graduating seniors who want to conduct research or other projects overseas
can learn about successful strategies to receive a prestigious Fulbright
award at the Fulbright orientation session on April 13 at 4:00 pm in 219
Dauer Hall, the Ruth McQuown Room. Fulbright awards cover travel and
living expenses for a year in any of over 140 countries; students in any
field are encouraged to apply. Applicants for a Fulbright award must be
U.S. citizens, have an outstanding GPA, have a record of community
service, and be interested in international scholarship. The Fulbright
campus application deadline at UF is September 25. Visit the Fulbright

7.  SCHOLARSHIP: National Science Foundation:
An information session led by Dr. Randy Duran for future applicants of a
National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship will be
held on April 18 at 4:05 pm in 2346 Turlington Hall. The NSF Graduate
Research Fellowships provide three years of support for graduate study
leading to research- based master's or doctoral degrees in the fields of
science, mathematics, and engineering supported by the NSF and are
intended for students in the early stages of their graduate study.
Graduating seniors apply in November/December, with the specific deadline
being related to the field of study. For more information about the
Fellowships, choose "Specialized Information for Graduate Students" on the
NSF website at www.nsf.gov.

8.  SERVICE: Ballin in the Swamp:
The Office of Community Service, UF Men's Basketball team, and
International Men of America are hosting the first annual "Ballin in the
Swamp" basketball tournament for Gainesville's at-risk youth on April 16
at the basketball practice complex starting at 9:00 am. Each team will be
assigned a UF basketball player to be its coach for the day, but we need
your help to make it a success! Sport-savvy volunteers are needed for refs

9.  RESEARCH: Pediatric Neuropsychology:
We are looking for students from various disciplines that are interested
in meaningful research. Current studies: attention and memory in children
with ADHD and longitudinal study of children with Traumatic Brain
Injuries. Duties will include: administering psychological tests to
children, evaluating results, recruiting participants, and general lab
duties. We require: at least 4 semesters left at UF, a 2-semester
commitment, 6 hours per week, and a minimum GPA of 3.5. We will be
interviewing April 21-22 for new members to begin Summer C, and all those
interested should contact Cara Kimberg at [log in to unmask] before
April 18.

10. OPPORTUNITY: African Languages:
Do you need to fulfill your foreign language requirement? The Program in
African Languages at UF is one of the best in the nation. The languages
offered and location spoken are: Akan (Ghana), Amharic (Ethiopia), Arabic
(North Africa), Swahili (East Africa), Wolof (Senegal), Xhosa (South
Africa), and Yoruba (Nigeria). Taking an African language increases your
chances in the expanding international job market, you can obtain grants
in graduate school for studying an African language, you can study abroad,
and it prepares you for jobs in Peace Corps and other humanitarian

11. OPPORTUNITY: Teach for America Info Session:
Teach for America Information Session on April 14 at 7:00 pm in Reitz
Union B-70. Teach for America calls upon outstanding recent college
graduates of all backgrounds and academic majors to teach for two years in
urban and rural public schools and to become lifelong leaders in the
effort to expand opportunity for children. No previous education
experience or coursework necessary. Full first-year teacher salary and
benefits, financial aid, plus a $9,450 AmeriCorps education award (if

13. OPPORTUNITY: Student Tickets to UF Performing Arts Events:
This week at the Phillips Center, the stage heats up with Ballet
Hispanico's sultry "NightClub" (April 13, 7:30 pm), and Indian music
legend Ravi Shankar performs with his daughter Anoushka (April 17, 7:30
pm). Remember, UF students can purchase tickets to UF Performing Arts
events for $10, anywhere in the house! Only one $10 ticket per student.

14. OPPORTUNITY: 2005 Student Season Football Tickets:
Do you want 2005 season football tickets?  If so, you must enter the
student football ticket lottery by April 29. To enter the lottery and
pre-pay for your tickets, please call the G.A.T.O.R.S. phone system at
352- 384-3262 locally or 877-428-6747 toll-free nationwide. You have the
entire three-week period to register for the lottery and registering on
the first day DOES NOT increase your chance of winning the lottery. Season
tickets are $42 plus a $4 processing fee. All lottery winners will be
e-mailed by May 6. If you have any questions, please call the Gator
Student Ticket Office at 352-375-4683, ext. 6878 Monday - Friday, 8:30 am
to 5:00 pm.

15. EVENT: Pride Awareness Month:
Pride Awareness Month is a series of events designed to educate by
bringing strong leaders of the LGBTQ community to you. We strive to
discuss issues facing the lives of everyone. It is our goal to portray the
culture and lives of individuals in the LGBTQ community in order to
promote awareness and diversity throughout the UF and world community.
Events include StaceyAnn Chin, Queer Ball, Sofia and Karamo from MTV,
Women's Music Festival, as well as many other fun and interesting events.

16. EVENT: Apple for You:
Looking for a way to show your appreciation to a favorite professor,
faculty or staff member? Campus Diplomats can help! Stop by our tables at
Turlington and the Reitz Colonnade, April 11-15 from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm and

17. EVENT: ACCENT Speaker:
ACCENT Speaker's Bureau is bringing Jose Canseco, former major league
baseball player and controversial author to make his very first college
appearance at the University of Florida! Jose will speak in the O'Connell
Center at 8:00 pm on April 13. Doors open at 7:00 pm. For more

18. EVENT: Free Hearing Screenings:
UF's National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is
offering free hearing screenings to the entire Gainesville community on
April 14 from 2:00-4:00 pm in 460 Dauer Hall. No appointment necessary.

19. EVENT: Mountain Bike with TRiP:

20. EVENT: Emerald Legacy Apollo Night:
The UF chapter of Progressive Black Men, Inc. is proud to announce our
first annual Emerald Legacy Apollo Night on April 15 at 7:00 pm in Shands
Auditorium. The show will feature local high school talent and all
proceeds from the event will go towards our annual Emerald Legacy
scholarship. A $100 grand prize as well as 1st and 2nd runner up prizes
will be available. Tickets are only $3 and pre-sell tickets are available

21. EVENT: Celebration of Pope John Paul II:
Celebration of the Life of Pope John Paul II: The Gainesville Catholic
Student community would like to invite all students of every race, gender,
and creed to a celebration of Pope John Paul II. This is a man who reached
out to all nations and all believers and brought peace, hope, love, and
life to the world. Join us on April 16 at 7:30 pm at the Reitz Union

22. EVENT: Gator Dining:
Join us April 19 for a BBQ cook-out at Broward Dining Hall from 5:00-8:00
pm. We will be serving BBQ Chicken Breast, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Baked
Potatoes, Caesar Salad, Corn on the Cob, Garlic Toast and for dessert, an
incredible Ice Cream Sundae Bar. Dinner and dessert will be served from
