ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUCEMENTS
1.  Registrarís Deadlines:
January 21, 2005:  Deadline to Apply for S/U Option
January 28, 2005:  Deadline to Withdraw From All Spring Classes With a 25%
                    Refund and W Assigned
January 28, 2005:  AA and Degree Application Deadline
Students who want to register to vote in Alachua County can obtain more
information at the Web site of the Supervisor of Elections

ENHANCING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE
2.  SCHOLARSHIP: University Scholars Program:
The University Scholars Program presents students with the opportunity to
work closely with faculty mentors while pursuing fundamental research,
exploring scholarly inquiry, and developing new knowledge. University
Scholars will receive a $2500 research stipend, and up to $500 in
financial support for related costs such as travel to a scholarly
conference in presenting such research.  Scholars also have the
opportunity to publish their work in UFís on-line Journal of Undergraduate
Research, and to present their research in the University Scholars
Symposium.  All University Scholars must register for at least one credit
of research during Summer 2005, attend a seminar from the Journal of
Undergraduate Research during fall 2005, and have undergraduate status
through December 2005. Deadline February 25, applications should be
submitted to the college or department in which the research will be
performed. Applications and further details are available at the

3.  SERVICE: 20 Million Minutes of Service Campaign:
The University of Florida Office of Community Service is proud to announce
its "20 Million Minutes of Service" campaign.  This year, our office is
pledging to have accumulated 20 Million community service minutes in
conjunction with student organizations and faculty members.  WE NEED YOUR
HELP TO MAKE THIS GOAL A REALITY!  If you or you organization is
interested in this endeavor, contact Billy Holcombe, campaign coordinator,

be honored at our annual soiree in March 2005!

4.  SERVICE: Mentoring Elementary School Children:
Champs & Project MASCOT Orientation If you are a dedicated, reliable, and
positive person that is interested in mentoring to an elementary student,
come and attend an information session/orientation on Thursday, January 20
from 7-8pm at the Graham Gallery.  If you have any questions please email

5.  SERVICE: STARS Childrenís Tutoring Program
Want to make a difference amongst the youth in the Gainesville community?
Want to tutor/mentor children in after-school programs? Join S.T.A.R.S -
Students Taking an Active Role in Society. There will be an orientation
for new and returning volunteers Thursday, February 3rd in the Reitz Union
Room 282 at 7:00pm. For more information, contact Ashley at

6.  SERVICE: Dance Marathon Registration:
Bring on the dancers!  Regular Dancer Registration for Dance Marathon at
UF 2005 starts the week of January 18-21 and continues the following week,
January 24-28.  Dancers first register online at www.floridadm.org. Then,
bring the printed application and $30 cash or a check made payable to
Children's Miracle Network to the Reitz Union Colonnade or Turlington
Plaza between 10:30a.m. - 3p.m.  Another way to have fun and support the
Children's Miracle Network is the 5K Miracle Run on Jan. 29. Runners may
register online or at 7 a.m. on race day at Flavet Field.  The race starts
at 9 a.m.

7.  OPPORTUNITY: UF Hall of Fame Applications:
The 2005 Applications for the University of Florida Hall of Fame are now
available. Applicants must be classified as a senior or above, or be
graduate or professional school students at UF. The Hall of Fame is
reserved for those students who have shown truly superior leadership and
achievement through their activities and scholarship while members of the
University of Florida community. Applications are available at: P202
Peabody Hall; Reitz Union Activities Desk; Reitz Info. Desk; 155 Tigert
Hall-Student Affairs; or on the web www.ufsa.ufl.edu/OVP/halloffame.htm.
Deadline February 25th by 4:00pm, turned in at room 155 Tigert Hall.

8.  OPPORTUNITY: Wilderness First Aid Certification with TRiP:
January 29 & 30, two full days of WFA training with Wilderness Medical
Associates for $200. If you do any outdoor activities, you should have
this certification! Stay safe in the Outdoors, come learn how. For more

of the Reitz Union.

9.  LEADERSHIP: SG Assistant Director Position:
The Banquet Cabinet of Student Government is currently seeking an
Assistant Director with camera (digital and film) expertise.  To apply,
please pick up an application in the Student Government office located on
the 3rd floor of the Reitz Union.  All majors and classifications welcome.

10. LEADERSHIP: Apply for FYF Teaching Assistant Position:
Apply to be a teaching assistant for First-Year Florida, UFís extended
orientation course for new students.  Peer Leaders help facilitate
classroom discussions, conduct presentations on course topics, plan
out-of- class activities, and serve as a role model for new students. Peer
Leaders gain leadership and public speaking skills, as well as the unique
opportunity to teach undergraduate students. Open to all full-time
undergraduate students with at least a 2.75 GPA. Applications and a
selection timeline are available at www.dso.ufl.edu/nsp by following the
link to First-Year Florida. Applications are due to New Student Programs
in Peabody Hall by 4:30pm on Tuesday, February 1st.

11. EVENT: Volunteer Organization Fair:
The Office of Community Service invites you to the Volunteer Organization
Fair on Thursday, January 20 from 10am-3pm at the Reitz Union Colonnade.
Representatives from over 60 local philanthropic organizations will be
there to recruit volunteers.  Students can find the project or program
that fits their needs and interests. Volunteering lets you meet people,
build relationships, make a difference in society, and learn skills
necessary for surviving in the real world. Come to the fair and start

12. EVENT: MLK Program:
The Division of Student Affairs Multicultural Series will host Joe Rogers
on Wednesday, January 19 at 8 pm in the Rion Ballroom, in the J. Wayne
Reitz Union.  The Dream Alive Program is an acclaimed dedication to the
memory and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and leaders of the Civil
Rights Movement.  The performance is free and open to the public.  For

13. EVENT: Black History Month Opening Ceremonies:
Black History Month 2005 is proud to announce the opening ceremonies for
this traditional month-long celebration highlighting the achievements of
Blacks through speaking engagements, concerts, forums, and activities.
The theme for the month is Elements of Ebony.  Opening ceremonies will
begin this Friday, January 21, 2005 at 8:30pm in the Reitz Union Rion
Ballroom.  Immediately following the event, we will have the Black History
Month ball, Ebony Ecstasy, which will have free food, prizes, and
souvenirs!

14. EVENT: Call for Womenís History Month Program Proposals:
Women's History Month, held annually during the month of March, is a
vehicle for acknowledging and celebrating the accomplishments and
contributions of women in society. This year, we want your organization to
be a part of the festivities! The WHM Committee will be accepting program
proposals until February 18th. Mini-grants are available and applications
for them are due by February 4th. Applications are at the Dean of Students
Office in Peabody Hall in the New Student Programs office or downloaded
from our website at http://www.dso.ufl.edu/whm/.  Please contact Nora

15. EVENT: Dine with the Dean:
Not much in life is free, but here is a deal you can't beat-free lunch!
Each month students are invited to lunch with Dr. Gene Zdziarski, the Dean
of Students. The program provides students the opportunity to meet with
"Dean Gene" and talk about student issues over an informal lunch. For
Spring 2005, Dine with the Dean is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on
Thursday, February 10; Friday, March 25; Monday, April 18. To have your

16. EVENT: Sexual Assault Prevention Event:
Campus NOW would like to announce a special event hosted by the NOW Rape
Action Committee for Tuesday January 25th at 5:30 PM in Turlington, room
2349.  This event will be held in recognition of January as Sexual Assault
Awareness Month and will focus on sexual assault prevention and awareness
at the University of Florida.  Attendance is open to all interested, for

17. EVENT: Speaker, Mike Domitrz, "Can I Kiss You.":
This is an unforgettable and amazing program on Dating, Communication,
Respect, and Sexual Assault Awareness. Wednesday, January 19th, 2005. 8:00

18. EVENT: Speaker, Erin Weed, "Girls Fight Back":
Come to an empowering self defense and sexual assault prevention program
for college women by speaker Erin Weed. It will include an interactive
self defense lesson. Monday, January 24th in the Reitz Grand Ballroom at

19. EVENT: Writing on the Wall Project:
The Writing on the Wall project is going up Jan. 24!  WOTW is an annual
project to promote the breaking of barriers between students.  There are
many ways for your student organization to get involved!  Encourage your
members to come out and paint bricks as we table this week.  Also, make
sure to attend the tear down ceremony on Jan. 28 on the Plaza of the
Americas!  If your group would like to have a program/meeting at the wall
the week of Jan 24 or if you would like to get more information on how to

20. EVENT: FAB Benefit Music Show:
RUB will be hosting a benefit music show for Florida Alternative Breaks,
Thursday, January 20 at the Orange & Brew. Come see some of Gainesvilleís
finest local musicians perform, including The Fauxmones, March to May, and
Morningbell, all for only $5. All proceeds contribute to community service
trips to locations including New Orleans and Costa Rica. Bring your
friends, support the cause, and have a great time!  Doors open at 8:30
p.m., show begins at 9 p.m. Tickets available at the University Box

21. EVENT: Dominican Student Association Masquerade:
The Dominican Student Association would like to invite you to our Spring
2005 Welcome back Masquerade Social on January 22,2005 at the Reitz Union
Grand Ballroom at 9:00pm. You will get the opportunity to meet DSA
members, learn about DSA and Grupo Quisqueya dance group, get free food,
enjoy music by DJ Chase, and receive a free mask at the door!! Everything

22. EVENT: Discussion on Presidential Inauguration:
Don't let the Presidential Inauguration pass by without a moment of
reflection! The Campus American Civil Liberties Union (a non-partisan club
seeking to open student discussions on the Constitution and Bill of
Rights) will be hosting an open discussion on the Presidential
Inauguration and George Bush's oath to uphold the Constitution and Bill of
Rights at its first Spring semester meeting on Thursday January 20 at 7pm
Reitz Union room 121. Open to everyone, prospective members encouraged to
