ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.  REGISTRAR ANNOUNCEMENTS:
August 24: Fall Classes Begin

August 24 - 26 & 29 (by 11:59pm): Fall Drop/Add

August 29 (by 11:59pm): Last day to drop or withdraw from fall without fee
liability

Students are responsible for all classes that remain on their schedules after
the end of Drop/Add, so please confirm that your schedule is accurate. You can
access the Drop/Add link at http://www.isis.ufl.edu/.

September 2: Fall fees due by 3:30pm;

2.  SAT II LANGUAGE PLACEMENT:
Students who wish to continue study of a foreign language (after 2 years of
high school study) need to have appropriate placement (AP, IB, dual enrollment,
or SAT II score). The SAT II will be given on August 24, 25, and 26 for French,
German, Latin, and Spanish. To register for the SAT II or to find out more

3.  FINANCIAL AID ANNOUNCEMENTS:
> From August 17-September 2, Student Financial Affairs will be open
8:15am-5:00pm weekdays. Switchboard hours will be 8:00am to 4:45pm. On
September 5, SFA will be closed for Labor Day. Normal office hours,
8:00am-5:00pm, and normal phone hours, 9:00am-4:45pm, will resume September 6.
Financial aid applications and Gator Aid Application Guides for the 2005-06
academic year are available at SFA in S107 Criser Hall. SFA encourages students
to apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students should check the SFA website to
be sure they have completed all steps to ensure proper disbursement of fall
financial aid, including student loans: www.sfa.ufl.edu. Students can check the
status of their financial aid on ISIS: www.isis.ufl.edu.

4.  SECURITY UPDATES:
Starting last week, a variety of worms and attacks against unpatched Microsoft
computers swept the Internet. Computers that don't have current updates will
likely be compromised. Update your computer to protect your identity and other
personal data at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/.

In addition to free anti-virus software for all UF students, faculty and staff,
McAfee offers a free program called Stinger that will detect and remove
specific viruses at http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/.

McAfee VirusScan is available *FREE* to all UF students, faculty and staff.
Download it now at http://www.software.ufl.edu/mcafee/.

Win the IT Security Awareness Video contest! The UF IT Security Team is helping
Educause/I2 Computer and Network Security Task Force promote an IT Security
Awareness Video contest. Videos can cover a variety of IT security topics, be
three minutes or less and targeted toward other college students. Visit

is September 1.


ENHANCING THE UNDERGRADUATE EXPERIENCE

5.  SERVICE: SOAR at Howard Bishop:
The SOAR Program (Strengthening Opportunities And Reaching out) allows you to
do just that while making a valuable contribution to the youth of our
community! In partnership with Howard Bishop Middle School, UF's Center for
Leadership and Service offers unique volunteer opportunities on both the Orange
Team, which tutors and/or mentors 7th grade math students, and the Blue Team,
which individually and consistently mentors the students of the school's ESE

6.  SERVICE: Heart Walk Participants Needed:
The American Heart Association is inviting UF students and student
organizations to participate in the 2005 North Central Florida Heart Walk. A
Team Captain Kickoff will be held on August 30 at the Savannah Grande at
5:30pm. Organization leaders are invited to enjoy fun, food, and gather
information about how your organization can be a part of the 2005 Heart Walk.

7.  LEADERSHIP: Student Applications to serve on University Committees:
The University encourages student involvement through participation and
membership on committees that advise the administration on important issues.
Students are selected and appointed through various application processes and
in most cases serve for the academic year. If you are interested in being
considered for an appointment to a university committee for the 2005-06
academic year, complete the online application at the following web site:

Students eligible to serve on university committees will be selected from this
pool of applicants beginning September 9. Vacancies on committees that occur
during the year will be filled from this pool of applicants. For a complete

8.  LEADERSHIP: ACCENT Applications Available:
Don't miss your opportunity to be part of the nation's largest student-run
speaker's bureau, ACCENT. Pick up applications in the Student Activities
Center, 3rd floor Reitz Union. Applications are due by 5:00pm on August 31.
Please read instructions for interviews carefully. For questions, please e-mail

ACCENT Office in 306 Reitz.

9.  LEADERSHIP: SG Supervisor of Elections Applications:
Applications for the position of Assistant Supervisor of Elections are
currently available on the 3rd Floor of the Reitz Union. This position provides
an excellent opportunity for students to get involved in one of the nations
largest student-run elections. This position is only open to those who do not
hold any position in Student Government, or an Executive position in any SG
funded organization, and who hold no position of affiliation with any SG
political party. Applications are due on August 29 by 2:00pm in the SG office.

10. LEADERSHIP: Emerging Leaders Conference Applications:
The Emerging Leaders Conference is a Student Government agency that coordinates
a conference for outstanding high school juniors. ELC 2006 is currently seeking
Coordinators, Directors, Small Group Leaders and Staff. Stop by the SG office
on the 3rd floor of the Reitz Union for an application, or visit

11. LEADERSHIP: Freshman Leadership Council Applications:
You are invited to attend the annual Freshmen Leadership Council Meet and
Greet. The Freshmen Leadership Council is a Student Government organization
which provides freshmen students with the opportunity to educate other freshmen
on organizational involvement and reaching their greatest potential as leaders.
The Meet and Greet takes place on August 26 in 282 Reitz Union from
5:00-7:00pm. Applications for the Council are available in the SG office on the
3rd floor Reitz Union or online at www.sg.ufl.edu and are due on September 7 by
5:00pm to the SG Office.

12. STUDY ABROAD: Paris:
The UF Honors Program & the Paris Research Center are pleased to announce
Honors in Paris, Spring 2006. Join us at an Information Session on August 31 at
2:00pm in LIT 117 or at a special evening at the Harn on September 22 at
5:15pm. Learn more about the program and hear about the incredible experiences
of students at the Paris Research Center. Applications for the Spring 2006
program will be due September 30. This is a very competitive program, so please

13. OPPORTUNITY: Prestigious Scholarships Update:

14. OPPORTUNITY: IDS 4930: Facets of Sustainability Lecture Series:
In this new 1-credit course, you will learn about the ecological, economical
and social equity aspects of sustainability research which UF faculty are
conducting. The course includes 7-8 lectures presented by prominent UF faculty
working in different areas related to sustainability, as well as one
mini-symposium. An informational meeting will take place on August 24 at 3:00pm
at the Harn Museum Auditorium. For syllabus information:

15. OPPORTUNITY: Leisure Course Registration:
Sign up for Fall Leisure Courses now! Registration is online only and begins at
10:00am on August 24 at www.union.ufl.edu/leisure. All questions can be

16. OPPORTUNITY: Hispanic Heritage Month Participants Needed:
Are you athletic? Do you have what it takes to be the next Top Model? Do you
posses a hidden talent? Do you have what it takes to be crowned? If so,
Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) is looking for you. HHM is hosting four events
that need participants. If you are interested in the Soccer Tournament, Fashion
Show, Talent Show, or Pageant Show contact the following: Soccer

17. OPPORTUNITY: O'Connell Center Listserv:
The Stephen C. O'Connell Center has an electronic newsletter that will announce
all upcoming events and construction information. While the main purpose of
this listserv is to inform our audience of events at the O'Connell Center, it
can also be used to determine when parking near the O'Connell Center may be a
little more challenging than usual. If you would like to be added, please send

18. EVENT: UF Soccer Season:
The UF Soccer season begins August 26 at 7:00pm. Every Friday night match will
feature a UF student- only drawing for major prizes. We will kick-off the
season by giving away an orange Corda-Roy's bean bag and blue ottoman. Other
prizes include iPods, digital cameras, and the new Playstation Portable. See
you Friday night at 7:00pm when the Gators take on Drake.

19. EVENT: Beatles Tribute Band at the Phillips Center:
Are you upset that you weren't around for Beatlemania? Experience it with The
Fab Four, the ultimate Beatles tribute band, at the Phillips Center for the
Performing Arts on August 28 at 4:00pm. Remember to bring your valid Gator 1
card to the Phillips Center Box Office or University Box Office for $10 student
tickets anywhere in the house! Subject to availability. Only one student ticket

20. EVENT: Danza Dance Company Auditions:
If you thought you had to give up your dancing career once you came to college,
we have good news! Join UF's Premier Dance Company, Danza Dance Company, and
continue with your passion. Auditions will take place on August 29 at 6:30pm in
the O'Connell Center Dance Studio, between Gates 1 and 2. Please be prompt,
dressed and ready to dance. No sneakers allowed. Auditions are open to all UF

21. EVENT: Homecoming Soulfest Auditions:
UF students and organizations interested in applying to be in Soulfest, a
Homecoming event on October 2 can pick up applications in the Florida Blue Key
office in the Reitz Union or at LaCasita or IBC.  Applications are due August
29. Soulfest is Homecoming's multicultural extravaganza and outdoor concert
event. Students, faculty and the Gainesville community have the opportunity to
celebrate the diversity found on UF's campus. These displays include
performances by artistic, talented groups and student organizations who express
their traditions through dancing, singing, poetry, stepping and other forms of
articulation.

22. EVENT: Gator Growl Auditions and Tickets:
Ever wanted to grace the big screen? Gator Growl is currently casting for
several skits that will be shown at this year's show. No experience or
preparation is required. Stop by 123 Reitz (Bryan Lounge) any time 4:00-7:00pm
on August 29. Those auditioning will not have to stay for the duration of the
casting call. A current photograph will be required at the time of audition.

Impersonation and improvisation will meet on stage as Wayne Brady, star of
Whose Line Is It Anyways?, has been signed to appear at the 80th Annual
University of Florida Gator Growl "Revenge of the Swamp" on October 7 at Ben
Hill Griffin Stadium. Student tickets, priced at $5.00 each until 15,000 are
sold, are on sale now and only can be purchased through the University Box
Office in the Constans Theatre. General public admission tickets are $18.00 and
can be purchased at any Ticketmaster location and at Ticketmaster.com.  For
