Preface: I have not been able to keep up with the social network literature in the last four years, but I still occaisionally enjoy the mail list.
Question: This could be a more interesting than it first seems. Imagine you have a large entity relationship map based on observed social interactions rather than heirarchical family connections in which the two Roethlisberger's are members. Can you derive a hypothesis test for a degree of relationship? Such that a test statistics are generated for "no relationship", "casual relationship", "extended family relationship", and "immediate family" ? That would be a very useful in a number of real-world situations.

Idle Q of the New Year?
Is Ben Roethlisberger, QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers, related to Fritz Roethlisberger, of the Hawthorne study (Roethlisberger & Dickson, 1939).
Google, to its shame, was no help at all.
