My coauthor Scott Allen and I wrote a detailed profile of Orkut some time
ago:
http://www.onlinebusinessnetworks.com/online-social-networks-guide/orkut.php
as part of our social software site guide
(http://www.onlinebusinessnetworks.com/online-social-networks-guide/ )
As background, Scott and I are in the last stage of writing a book on
building a powerful social network online. AMACOM Books (the publishing arm
of the American Management Association) will publish 'The Virtual Handshake:
Opening Doors and Closing Deals Online' in June 2005. We have extensive
information about the book, including a sample chapter and a detailed blog,
at http://www.OnlineBusinessNetworks.com .
Our book is squarely focused on the practical question: how can the average
business person use social software to build relationships with new
customers, a new employer, or whoever else is relevant to his/her goals.
This will be the first mass market book (that we know of) about how to use
the new wave of social software: relationship capital management software,
social networking sites, blogs, chat, IM, and so on.
If you are doing research in this area, we would be very happy to speak with
you. Please contact us back off-list. Although we're finalizing the book's
text within a few weeks, we now still have the opportunity to incorporate
new research relevant to our book.
