That technology will I'm sure be perfected by many; I have noticed certain
undergraduate students who are able to ward them off by sleep.

The word network will be used many ways.  I am not sure the use of the word
in research, given its gelatinous nature, will constitute a single network
except in the very loosest sense--or as Valdis says, the criteria for a link
are very low.  Disciplines, however, are clearly rather strong links.
