In particular, you might want to look at Akella, P., Interrante, M., &
Granovetter, M. "Selling the Spoke way" (.pdf available at the above
site) which examines spoke.com's network. Akella was an employee (a
founder?) of the firm and, from what I understand, a key architect of
the system.
