URGENT WEB SECURITY ANNOUNCEMENT

*Window **Meta** File Vulnerability - Students*

A serious vulnerability was discovered in Windows Meta File (WMF) during
the holidays. It impacts all versions of all Windows operating systems and
is being actively exploited across the world affecting many Windows file
types and applications.

By simply visiting websites, opening emails, or reading instant messages
to view infected images, users can expose themselves to viruses, worms and
spyware. It is more important than ever to use discretion and ensure trust
when opening email, surfing the web, messaging, or using other network
applications.

Microsoft issued a patch Thursday, January 5. If you are using Microsoft
Windows, visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to apply this fix to
your computer immediately. While at this site, you should also verify that
your Windows Automatic Updates control (right side of page) is on.

The UF IT Security Team offers a website in which UF students, faculty and
staff can use to test computers for the vulnerability. For more
information and a link to the test, visit http://infosec.ufl.edu/wmf/

Only you can safeguard your computer. Please practice caution online and
take appropriate measures to avoid malicious sites and contacts.
