We've been very happy with Modumath for those tutorial students; of all the math software I've seen (which isn't all of it, but it's a lot), it's the only program that has what I'd call real instruction, with lots of visuals that bring meaning to the math. It's not perfect - some students still need some instruction - and I've only had about a dozen students working with it, but I'm really looking forward to next semester when we use it more broadly.

I'm looking into ways to deliver basic math instruction to students in a
tutoring lab setting, rather than in the classroom. Some of our students
need just a refresher, but others need real instruction. Is A+dvancer
the type of program that would work in both these situations?
I looked over your power point and was very impressed, but I have a
couple of questions still -
Do students using A+dvancer also receive learning assistance support
from anyone at your school?
Are students charged for the use of the program?
Do they receive any institutional credit for using the program?
How much time does a typical student spend using the coursework portion
of the program?

Susan,
Nassau Community College serves many developmental students. We have
over 21,000 students on our campus and many of them are developmental
math students. While we have tried many different approaches over the
past few years to help with remediation, we have found the on-line
A+dvancer learning program to be very successful.
A+dvancer is a program that can be used to assess and to assist
developmental students in areas of math, reading and English. It is a
computer-based instructional/tutorial program that has proven to help
students succeed!
The students are first asked to take an assessment "test" to identify
their strenghts and weaknesses. After the assesment is completed,
individualized prescriptive coursework is assigned to the student
either automatically by the computer, or by a staff member at your
office. The beauty is that students can work in a designated computer
lab/classroom, and they can work on the coursework from home.
The results have been amazing! Ad+vancer has been instrumental for the
students and fr our college, as it has lowered remediation (particularly
in math) on our campus!
