Here's what I use on Unix/Mac OS X:
Graph/Matrix operations, statistical analysis, rapid prototyping:
C/C++, Java, Python
Conceptualization/Prototyping/computing simple measures/visualization:
A nice all-in-one package with lots of nice SNA functions actually.
Excellent interactivity and customization.
Boost Graph Library http://www.boost.org/libs/graph/doc/
Top-notch (peer-reviewed code) and blazingly fast, but not many SNA
If you use a simple data format like edge-lists or matrices, you can
conceptualize with JUNG, analyze with R, visualize with prefuse,
translate it to BGL and scale it really well, all the while easily
piping data between them.
