The bill for GARC's special funding request was approved on April 25th.
The minutes from that Student Government meeting are now posted on the SG
web site.

G-NES is the Gator Nation Earth Station - a $3522 funding request for an
automated satellite up/downlink system that will be connected via the
Internet. The request includes $3000 of existing and to-be-donated
resources.

The special funding request was approved by Student Government. Purchase
orders are being made, and the equipment could be here soon. The next
step will be an antenna party to prepare the tower for the new antennas
and then another antenna party to actually install them.

Special thanks go to Dante Buckley, KI4LDJ, for all his efforts in making
this special request happen. Dante gave a great presentation to the SG
allocations committee and was able to rally a lot of student support for
the SG meeting.

Please refer to the following notes from the SG meeting:

SB2006-1044 Special Request for Gator Amateur Radio Club - Chairwoman
Gonzalez, with the committee members, Senator Hernandez and Gator Amateur
Radio Club Treasurer Dante Buckley, presented the bill for $3,522.00. The
request is for equipment for the Gator Nation Earth Station (GNES) program
in conjunction with the Small Satellite Design Club for a ground
communication system with amateur spacecraft for international good will
and to enhance UF's image. The organization has grown to 25-30 members
after only having eight members at the time of their budget hearing. This
request is for equipment outside the organization's regular budget that
will be stored with other Gator Amateur Radio Club equipment on the top of
Shands. The Allocations budget has approximately $18,000 for the
remainder of the fiscal year. The questioning period was extended through
a speakers list after a call for division and hand count vote. The
program is not an academic requirement, but students can receive extra
credit and receive hands-on experience. Over $3,000 of outside funding in
equipment and in-kind contributions have been secured. Speaking con,
Senator Deslandes said she really didn't understand what the group is
doing; Senator Drayton felt it was not beneficial to the student body;
Chairman Green felt this was not appropriate funding since any user must
be licensed; and Chairman Moseley was concerned about the storage and use
of the equipment. Speaking pro, Senator Amador said that Senate had
funded a small gymnastics organization and this was a purchase for
infrastructure and Senator Hernandez said it would give new opportunities
for other organizations. Senator Renner called the question to move to a
vote. The motion passed after a call for division and hand count. The
bill passed as presented.
