All,
I have piped in only once since I have been a member, so my word might not
mean anything to anyone. I have gotten a great deal of insight about SNA
that I need, since it is not quite my field, and wish I could contribute
more. HOWEVER, this entire conversation is wearing on me. TAKE IT OFF THE
LIST, please.
But, seriously, for my two cents, SNA is an social science analytical
method. AND. SO big deal. The NSA uses all sorts of social science methods.
And hard science methods. You have a method and various theories, AND????
And sorry, not Oppenheimer, so a bit of difference.
I used to LOVE this list, and the political slant has COMPLETELY alienated
me.
UNSUBSCRIBE, pls.

You know Christophe, I have read a *lot* of theory and methodology in SNA,
and I can't recall one single case where anyone has said SNA is
fundamentally for or against democracy. If I have missed these cases, maybe
you could give me some references.
If you're going on a witch-hunt for the tools of Big Brother, why don't you
attack language, or rather, speech itself? It's a much bigger player than
SNA could ever dream of being. Remember Newspeak in the novel? None of
these sins against democracy would occur if only people didn't speak.

Hmmm, i think that the easiest ways to respond to threats to democracy are
themselves threats to democracy. I thus still don't agree to say that SNA
is neutral wrt democracy.
Computer-aided management of (huge amount of) personal data is hardly a
'Big-Brother-safe' way to respond to threats to democracy, even if i agree
it may be hard to avoid (still it's important to keep this in mind and not
just pretend it's nothing but a neutral tool).
