Director, SMART Learning Commons 
University of Minnesota – Twin Cities

The University seeks a dynamic individual with a commitment to student 
learning who will have primary responsibility for developing, leading, and 
managing the SMART Learning Commons, which supports and enhances student 
learning, writing, research, numeracy, and use of technology at the 
University of Minnesota. This position is a full-time campus-level director 
position reporting to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

Background The SMART Learning Commons (SMART LC) is a newly-funded 
collaboration between several University partners that provides a holistic, 
integrated set of customized learning support services to enhance the 
academic achievement of University of Minnesota Twin Cities students. 
Currently based at Magrath Library, the SMART LC offers face-to-face Peer 
Learning Consultants in a broad range of academic subjects and skills 
including science, math, research and writing. SMART LC also offers subject 
matter-specific workshops, supplementary discussion and review sessions, 
exam practice sessions, and study skills workshops.

Through collaborative partnerships the SMART LC provides expertise, 
services and resources to support the University’s strategic goal of being 
a learner-centered and research-intensive institution. The long-term vision 
of the SMART Learning Commons is to expand services to all three geographic 
regions of the Twin Cities campus. In the first year, the Director will 
have primary responsibility for the planning and construction of the SMART 
Commons space on the St. Paul campus. The director will also have a 
significant role in creating the shared vision and the collaboration for 
success that will carry this enterprise forward.


Position Responsibilities

Leadership and Management • Provide intellectual and professional 
leadership for a highly collaborative venture • Work closely with faculty 
and other campus professionals to define and articulate the learning needs 
of students • Develop initiatives that respond to learning needs through 
individual assistance; programming; and printed, on-line and 
technology-based services and resources • Work proactively with faculty to 
determine how to best utilize and refine SMART learning services for the 
classroom. • Responsible for the daily management of the SMART LC, which 
currently includes a number of peer consultants. • In conjunction with 
academic departments, recruit and select staff, including student staff; 
conduct or coordinate training; supervise staff; conduct performance 
evaluations • Monitor and ensure quality of services; and ensure continuous 
professional upgrading and improvement • Plan and forecast budgets; manage 
the department’s financial administration including income, expenses, 
distribution and allocation of funds; oversee and authorize cash flow 
activities • Provide outreach and communication services as required • Act 
as a resource to University academic and student services staff concerning 
issues of student learning and its relationship to academic performance and 
retention • Participate in and present at scholarly conferences on relevant 
learning, teaching and higher education issues • Participate in setting a 
campus research agenda on student learning

Required Qualifications
• Master’s Degree
• Five years increasingly responsible experience in higher education 
• Familiar and comfortable with a collaborative leadership model

Preferred Qualifications • PhD • Expertise in teaching and learning in 
higher education including student learning and academic performance issues 
• Expertise in areas of curriculum design, planning, development, and 
assessment • Expertise in collaborative learning, TA training, and faculty 
development • Knowledge of student characteristics at the undergraduate and 
graduate levels • Experience consulting and collaborating with university 
faculty and TA’s • Demonstrated experience in a managerial capacity 
including excellent skills in administration, program management, conflict 
resolution, interpersonal and coaching skills • Excellent team building and 
supervisory skills; ability to motivate staff • Well developed fiscal 
management skills including revenue generating activities • Strong research 
skills and the ability to apply, analyze and synthesize complex theoretical 
concepts and to rapidly learn and apply new technological knowledge and 
skills • Expertise in word processing, data management and fiscal 
management systems
