A recent American Economic Review paper contrasts the economic view of
social network - where social ties can be acquired as resources -- with what
the authors see as the sociological view -- that social ties are spontaneous
outcome of interaction. Using formal modeling they find that one view is
more plausible. It is the sociological one.
