HI Valdis, great to see this. I've noticed what you notice too with SNAers
rarely showing negative ties, so often display only part of the picture of
networks. I am stimulated by your experiment and what you have produced
here.
I'm keen to discuss this more with you.......how to use both positive and
negative ties in a sociogram, which I have done in my work.
I am interested you are using both countries and subgroups/factions as
nodes, and separating out Hezbollah from Palestine. Your sociogram shows me
how national armies are relating to factions or subgroups within countries.
What is your thinking there?
In displaying an action sociogram like this,I would find this helpful for
you to indicate this is your 'perceptual sociogram' at a particular date as
well as the criteria you have used, 'friends' and 'enemies'. In this way
there is not confusion as to whether this data has been collected from the
key players involved, more it is a researcher/analyst's perception at a
particular moment in time.
And of course our differences in perception quickly become apparent if say I
were to produce a similar perceptual sociogram based on action of armies of
one country to another. for example: My perception is USA is negative to
Iraq, and that Iran is positive to Lebanon. A further distinction to clarify
might be to be specific as to whether those who are negative or positive to
other countries are armies or governments.
At the INSNA conference of May this year, there was a presentation from
Jurgen which mapped negative relationships between countries over time, and
it is great to see the experiments of technology being used in this way. If
we understand negative relationships more fully and the impact of moving
towards people we are negative to with negative intentions, we are likely to
gain greater appreciation of the damaging interpersonal and social affect of
these actions.
regards, Diana Jones

In SNA we rarely use negative ties... I'm experimenting with
attracting and repelling forces between nodes -- players in the
Mideast.

Enjoy!
