Roberta,
Hunter Boylan's book What Works describes the value of tutor training. I
don't have it with me here, so I cannot cite a page reference.
Boylan, H. (2002). What works: Research-based best practices in
developmental education. Boone, NC: Continuous Quality Improvement
Network/National Center for Developmental Education.
Also an article from JDE that is available online at
http://www.ncde.appstate.edu/reserve_reading/program_components.html cites
the value of tutor training.
Boylan, H., Bliss, L., & Bonham, B. (1997). Program components and their
relationship to student success. Journal of Developmental Education, 20(3),
2-4, 6, 8.
