To weigh in a little bit here, I've been using Ubuntu for just over a
year now. I've messed with GNU/Linux on and off for the last nine years
and never stuck with it until I found Ubuntu. Having said that, I'm
definitely *not* a fanboy of any particular distribution, including
Ubuntu, but I have been unable to switch long-term to any other distros,
and I've tried...just too many quirks and apt-get is too useful and easy.

I'll second/third/whatever DO NOT USE AUTOMATIX. I used it when I was a
newbie and it caused much frustration and many an upgrade to fail. You
can try EasyUbuntu, which isn't as bad, but the thing to remember is
that when you upgrade from one version to another, make sure you remove
ALL third party software. That includes VMware, Google Desktop Linux,
you name it...if it didn't come from repositories (or was built from
source from a project that *is* in the repos), remove it.

Ubuntu has plenty of GUI apps to ease the transition from Windows to
command line, but you definitely need to get comfortable with the
command line and learn how to use bash...it will make your life much
easier and remains, in my opinion, a necessary skill to properly
maintain a GNU/Linux system.
