Qualitative and quantitative refer to the methods of doing research on a
social network. For the former, you interview multiple people and ask them
who they are friends with or relate to in other ways. Then you can describe
and interpret the network, usually in considerable detail and depth
including their feelings and emotions and context. In contrast, when you
use a quantitative approach, you administer a survey or some other means to
count the relationships between different people in a group. Then you can
analyze the resulting numbers of ties with statistics and other mathematical
tools. Each method has its respective strengths and weaknesses.

Dear all,
I am having a hard time understanding what really is a qualitative
social network or qualitative social network analysis. Can you show me
an example illustrating the differences between quantitative and
qualitative networks?
Much appreciated!
