First of all, tons of thanks to all who replied to my query yesterday about
an article with an org chart and social network superimposed. Unfortunately,
none of the submissions were the one I remembered reading not long ago. They
all verbally demonstrated similar (excellent) arguments, but did not quite
have the visual impact I was looking for.
The figure I remember actually looked like a typical org chart (all
horizontal and vertical lines), which looked absolutely absurd with the
social network superimposed. Unfortunately I can't remember if
extra-organizational ties were included, but they would have likely further
highlighted the point that functional roles and credentialism have their
