Kathy-
I am glad you asked this question. Vocabulary is an important aspect of
students' success and literacy development. A seminal piece that has a ton
of great cites and guidance is
Simpson, M. L., & Randall, S. N. (2000). Vocabulary development at the
college level. In R. Flippo & D. Caverly (Eds.), Research in college reading
programs (pp. 43-73). Mahwah, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum Associates.
Another piece to look at in terms of research in multiple areas of
developmental education (including vocabulary) is
Simpson, M. L., Stahl, N. A., & Francis, M. A. (2004). Reading and learning
strategies: Recommendations for the 21st Century. Journal of Developmental
Education, 28(2), 2-15, 32.
Good luck and "happy wording".
