Academic Counselor/Peer Mentoring Program Coordinator

_Position Description:_
Adams State College Student Support Services in Alamosa, Colorado
currently has an opening for an Academic Counselor/Peer Mentoring
Program Coordinator. This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt position.
The Adams State College Student Support Services (SSS) Academic
Counselor/Peer Mentoring Program Coordinator provides academic, career
and financial aid counseling services to eligible first-generation,
low-income students and students with disabilities. He/she implements
processes that verify student eligibility, assesses academic need,
tracks student progress and intervenes with struggling or lapsed
students. Responsibilities also include developing academic/life skills
workshops, offering extracurricular educational activities on and off
campus, and assisting in coordinating the SSS Summer Scholars Bridge
Program. Other duties include establishing partnerships across campus
and otherwise contributing to SSS's overall strategic plan for improving
participant retention and graduation success rates. Finally, the
Academic Counselor coordinates the SSS Peer Mentoring Program, which
includes staying current with theory and practice and supervising
students. The Academic Counselor reports directly to the Director of
Student Support Services. Some evening/weekend hours are required. Some
in-state and out-of-state travel required.
_Specific Job Responsiblities:_
Deliver year-round academic, career and financial aid counseling
to SSS students to include:
* Developing and implementing enhanced academic advising/counseling
model
* Providing one-on-one counseling services
* Providing career counseling and job assistance
* Establishing partnerships with academic departments, college
administrators and others as an SSS student advocate
* Maintaining financial records and other paperwork on student progress
* Conducting academic and life skills workshops
* Conducting educational extracurricular activities on and off campus
* Intervening with emergency/crisis situations and notifying Director
* Providing computer skills assistance
Coordinate all facets of the SSS Mentoring Program to include:
* Managing Program budget
* Hiring, training, supervising and evaluating all SSS mentors
* Staying current with and adapting mentoring theory/practice
* Enhancing Mentoring Program efforts based on current
theory/practice, strategic planning and program development
* Participating in ASC committees as needed
* Participating in professional development activities
Conduct student identification and eligibility verification
activities to include:
1. Identifying, verifying and enrolling participants in SSS
2. Assessing and monitoring student progress
3. Documenting student progress per federal requirements
Document SSS Program progress to include:
1. Preparing and submitting monthly progress reports
2. Participating in annual report preparation and other reporting
requirements
Promote Student Support Services' mission within ASC, in the
public media, in local schools and in other colleges as required
through:
1. Delivering presentations about SSS to the larger ASC community
2. Developing marketing materials for SSS program and services
_Qualifications:_
* Bachelor's Degree required in education, mathematics, sciences or
related fields. Master's preferred.
* Working knowledge of Department of Education TRIO programs,
including student eligibility verification, assessment, and
tracking processes, preferred
* Experience in developing tutoring programs and/or teaching adult
students preferred
* Academic advising and counseling experience with adult students
(knowledge of student development theory a plus)
* Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse
backgrounds, including students with disabilities and
first-generation, low-income students
* Excellent computer and database skills, including Excel and
Microsoft Word
* Strong communication and organizational skills
* Bilingual (Spanish-English) ability preferred
* Supervisory experience preferred
* Experience working as part of an academic team
* Familiarity with collegiate academic and financial aid procedures
* Ability to perform position description
* Clean driving record and possession of, or ability to obtain, a
current Colorado State Driver's License
