Dear BEST'ers and ASES'ers,
Here are a few peer reviewed Life Cycle Assessments on alternative vehicles.
Most show that while hybrids do consume slightly more energy in the
production and material extraction stages, they more than make up for it
during use. If you don't have much time but are curious...scroll through
and look at the graphs :) If you really don't have much time check out the
graph on this page: http://www.ilea.org/lcas/taharaetal2001.html
Keep in mind that some are more recent than others and things change with
new processes and technologies...also LCA's are not always a catch all (they
are vary greatly in their scope so be careful), but they are one of the best
overall assessment tools we have.
Ps - it's my personal opinion that we should ride our bikes or ebikes a lot
more...save tons of money, save time (in many cases), get healthy, and
reduce many environmental impacts!

I also was suspicious of these values. I ran a few searches though the
journal search engines (Scopus and Engineering Village). I couldn't find any
per reviewed or any other publications on this.
