Besides the excellent research tools already mentioned, you may want to look into commercial (and often free) websites, such as www.LinkedIn.com, which are based upon social network theory.
Also, I suggest you look into new tools, like Wikis to see if you can build something that works for you. Try http://www.socialtext.com/
