The University of Illinois at Chicago has a long tradition of these kinds of
initiatives going back to at least 1970. They are not housed in one center
or office but there are several networks, partnerships and initiatives that
have addressed the needs as well as the assets that diverse populations
(students, staff and faculty) bring to UIC. I would contact Dr. Leonard
Ramirez at [log in to unmask] for more information about undergraduate,
graduate and health center initiatives.

David, Rhode Island is ahead of our time. I have not heard of such an
'intercultural' initiative for students at Chicago colleges or
universities, although most have some programs that provide support
and/or first year courses or advisement and the like to "underserved" or
alternatively admitted students from underserved or minority groups.
Currently, I am taking a course related to Multiculturalism and have
more greatly discovered that American universities (and America itself)
will need to more effectively serve and address group cultural needs and
multiculturalism needs. Sounds as if you all have an opportunity to be
well ahead on this.

Subject: Intercultural Community for Academic Success
Colleagues,
Three semesters ago, the Academic Enhancement Center launched a new
initiative, the Intercultural Community for Academic Success (ICAS).
Its mission is to support the academic growth and development of
students from underrepresented racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds;
improve retention; and insure that all URI students have equal
opportunities for academic success.
ICAS is grounded in the belief that students from African American,
Latino, Asian, Native American, and other underrepresented racial,
ethnic, and cultural backgrounds face unique barriers to success at The
University of Rhode Island. ICAS works to ensure that all areas of AEC
practice - including staffing, staff development, programming, research,
educational outreach, and collaboration with student and institutional
organizations - are attentive to and actively addressing these barriers.
So far, ICAS has been very well received by the university
administration, and it has been instrumental in drawing many more
students of color to our center. we believe we are developing a very
effective organizational model.
My question to everyone is - does your learning center have a similar
initiative? I know that many of us work with students of color and
others who face culture specific barriers to success. I would like to
connect with others and see what else is being developed in our field.
