Hello Everyone:
Thank you all for both your thoughts and commiserations; I see that many of
us are in the same situation in regards to nursing support.
David, I'm in a similar situation: we're a community college, also 100%
commuter and extremely rural, so the scramble to locate, train, and retain
peer tutors is an ongoing (endless) process. In lieu of any other
resources, I also have to encourage and help implement study groups for both
the nursing classes and the pre-req courses as it's so difficult to find
peer or professional tutors for most of them. I am able to hire
professional tutors (although paid at the same rate as our peer tutors, so
the reaction is usually "you're joking, right?"), and regardless, in the
past 2 years I've only been able to find 1 working nurse who is willing to
lead a 2-hour weekly study group after working an all night shift and she
does it only out of the goodness of her heart, certainly not for the $8/hr I
can pay her (although I confess I have begun to cheat and have unilaterally
upped it to $12 and am just WAITING to hear any criticism about that from
anyone).
I completely agree with your assessment of the issues in tutoring support as
well. The critical thinking aspect is virtually non-existent in our
students for exactly the reasons you mention, so assisting them in
approaching their studies with more of a global/holistic/scenario viewpoint
as opposed to 'fill in the blank, multiply choice' mindset is one of the
things I try to focus on as well.
I guess I'll just keep focusing on and improving/refining this approach, but
it did help to hear from all of you with your experiences and ideas in this
area.

Hi Kate, and fellow listers:
Guess what? Rhodes State graduates are 50% nurses so I have a little
experience dealing with nursing. (wonderful students, and *** teachers)
What I have found best is that peers lead study groups for each
quarter. I offer support via space and access to models when needed. The
nursing teachers are the content experts (one even exclaimed "What can
David Reedy do to help a student understand on a Nursing Test?"). For
those of you who know me best, I promise to not go into my response with
her when I heard it. Leave it to say, I helped the student omit the
instructor's extra information to focus on the vital stats needed to
produce the correct answers to her questions and bring the failing
grades up to 85-90% on subsequent tests. The nursing programs often have
a lab for students to practice in however it isn't always available and
students may not utilize it unsupervised. If they want to study with a
couple of other individuals and wish to drive to campus (we're 100%
commuter) I have no problem with having security open the center for
their use.
I also offer support via critical thinking exercises and problem
solving. All too often the students are wrapped up in analyzing the
myriad of answers to questions on tests (either in medspub or nclex
review type supports). This is WRONG. They won't be presented with this
in the field. They are presented with a PATIENT! So we analyze the
scenario, or information on the patient given in the question.
In my mind, critical thinking is what is missing in so many of
our students these days because of the lack of development from this
skill. I realize they are the instant generation with microwaves,
internet, text messaging, etc rarely having to wait and think through
the process. But we take even the smallest steps with each student by
requiring the syllabus accompany them and finding the information on it
before proceeding. Then we develop from there into a full blown scene of
searching for answers. The same is for all of my health related fields
which comprises another 30% of our students.
Ok, graduation is tonight. I get to go watch another group of my
wonderful tutors graduate and begin to train newbies all over again if I
can find some. Gas prices and minimum wage for peer tutors doesn't go
together well. I'm losing well over 3/4 of my tutor staff but at $6.85
and hour with an average gas price of $3.15 gal I don't blame them.
I hope this information helps you with the nursing stuff, and
for those of you with professional tutors, the peer tutor constant
turnover in two year schools that we lament can help you feel better
two. Yes, vacation is coming soon. At least I'm away for 1 week before
the summer quarter hits us.

Subject: Nursing Tutoring
Hello All:
I was wondering if any of you deal with difficulties in finding tutors
for
Nursing classes. Given the rigorous nature and tight scheduling of
Nursing
programs, I've been having an extremely hard time finding peer tutors
for
any of those classes. Locating professional tutors is even more
difficult
as they're all out there working ungodly hours (we have a massive
shortage
of nurses in the area, as many parts of the country do) and I can't
compete
with the pay rates even if they were willing/able to tutor.
I guess I'm wondering, for those of you at schools with Nursing
Programs, if
your Tutoring/Learning Centers handles tutoring for those classes or if
the
Nursing departments themselves handle the whole thing. Given the
critical
nature of these courses, I would like to see the Nursing department
themselves handle the tutoring and study groups, etc. for their courses
as
they know exactly what's needed. But to convince our administration,
I'm
sure that I'm going to need some data on the issue.
