Subject: ACT at Prairie Creek this Saturday, September 29th
Folks:
On October 20th, Alachua Conservation Trust is planning to open a trail
on our Prairie Creek Preserve to the public. There will be a
ribbon-cutting and other hoopla, and we expect scores of people at the
event, and hundreds to begin using the trail shortly thereafter. We're
having a work party on Saturday, September 29 to spruce up the trail and
add some amenities, and if you're so inclined, please join in.
The specific tasks that we will be doing include:
-- clearing of brush along sides of trail
-- mowing the trail and trailhead picnic areas
-- burning piles of debris
-- marking the trails (painting blazes on trees)
-- building a few benches
-- filling in holes and cutting stumps on the logging tram trail
-- constructing two kiosks
-- installing two gates, and repairing a third
The work will begin at 9 am at the old Zetrouer homestead where we'll
assign tasks to whatever crews are available, give you tools and
materials, and generally attempt to appear organized. Please let me
know if you plan to attend so that we can properly plan for
refreshments. We do encourage you to bring your own tools and mark
them.
Finally, there are other tasks in association with the opening day and
with interpretation on the kiosks that you may be interested in. For
instance, we would like to create an 8 foot long map of the entire
Gainesville-Hawthorne trail to put on one of the kiosks -- so if there's
somebody who wants to take on that project, let me know. We are also
researching the detailed history of the rail-line and of the immediate
area (they're both fascinating), so any research/writing/graphic help
would be appreciated.
Thanks for your efforts on our behalf in the past, and if you can
participate in this work party, please contact me.
Cheers,
Hutch
