Thanks greatly to Barry Wellman for advertising our netwiki site here on
the SOCNET mailing list. We appreciate the traffic, and indeed hope that
more people start to use the site as a way of bringing the different
"networks" communities together more.
However, this morning's timing coincided unfortunately with a recent
uptick in spam against our site (despite the use of various blocklists),
and the whole site so overburdened one of the UNC web servers last night
that it was forced offline for 12 hours. In order to get it back in
production this morning, I was forced to temporarily institute a
site-wide editing password, and of course there have been many hundreds
of page views today since this morning's email went out.
I hope none of you were discouraged by the inability to edit earlier
today. I have since switched to a captcha cookbook on the public pages,
and consequently removed the site-wide password which should do a much
better job keeping the spam edits out. With these improvements, and with
the site back online as intended, I wholeheartedly encourage you to come
back and to add to the site to make it more useful for all! Obviously,
if you encounter any site-related technical issues, please let me know.
