Dear Water Institute Affiliate faculty:

Things continue to hum along at the UF Water Institute. Below are a few
highlights of recent and upcoming activities. For more details on these
and other Water Institute programs, see the October 2007 Semi-Annual
Water Institute Report
<http://www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu/news/downloads/semiannualreport-oct20
07.pdf> or the Water Institute web site www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu
<http://www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu/> .

1. Inaugural UF Water Institute Symposium

Register now <http://www.treeo.ufl.edu/conferences/water/reg.aspx> for
the inaugural Water Institute Symposium that will be held at the
Gainesville Hilton University of Florida Conference Center on 27-28
February 2008. The theme of the first conference is Sustainable Water
Resources: Florida Challenges, Global Solutions. A great line-up of
invited speakers has committed to participate in the opening plenary
session of the symposium. In addition we received over 180 contributed
abstracts for oral and poster presentations from faculty, graduate
students, consultants, and state and federal agency scientists. The
symposium will conclude with a panel, comprised of the Executive
Directors of each of the Water Management Districts and the Secretary of
the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, that will focus on
current Florida policies and programs and future research and education
needs. See symposium agenda
<http://waterinstitute.ufl.edu/symposium/agenda.html> see for speaker
and program details.

2. UF Water Institute Distinguished Scholar Seminar Series

The Smallwood- UF Water Institute Distinguished Scholar Seminar Series
is in full-swing. We have had three great internationally-recognized
scholars speak in this series so far: Dr. Don Wright, Dr. Ed Miles and
Dr. Lonnie Thompson. If you missed these seminars you can go to
http://www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu/events/seminars.html to see pdfs of
the power point presentations. Streaming video of Dr. Thompson's seminar
will be added soon.

The next speaker in this series is Dr. Charlie Vorosmarty
<http://www.eos.sr.unh.edu/Faculty/Vorosmarty> , Research Professor with
the Water Systems Analysis Group, in the Institute for the Study of
Earth, Oceans, and Space, at the University of New Hampshire. Dr.
Vorosmarty will speak on global scale interactions among the water
cycle, climate, biogeochemistry, and anthropogenic activities at 3pm on
Thursday December 6th in 282 Reitz Union.

3. UF Water Institute: Water Systems Collaboratory

The UF Water Institute has proposed the long-term development of a Water
Systems Collaboratory, that will consist of a suite of distributed,
common-use, interdisciplinary labs, field facilities, and computer
facilities for use by all Water Institute Affiliate faculty. In 2007-08
the Water Institute received $500,000 from the Florida Legislature to
initiate development of this concept.

With this first phase of funding, the four prototype facilities will be
developed and hosted by UF Departments in the Colleges of Agricultural
and Life Sciences, Engineering, and Liberal Arts and Sciences. See
http://www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu/shared-facilities for details on the
facilities that are being developed with this first round of funding,
and instructions on how to access the facilities.

4. Upcoming UF Water Institute Sponsored Workshops

November 15-16 2007: The Water Institute will host a free half-day
instructional seminar on the use of ArcHydro for water resource
management applications. This seminar is open to UF faculty, students,
consulting firms, and Water Management District employees. A one-day
symposium to present the state of practice for the use of ArcHydro in
Florida will follow. The purpose of these meetings is to share
information about hydrologic data management and tool development for
water research, education, decision-making, visualization and modeling
efforts in Florida. Contact Kathleen Mckee ([log in to unmask] ) for more
information

November 30 2007: The Water Institute will host a one-day Water
Conservation Research Planning Workshop to review the status of Florida
water conservation research programs and develop a prioritized Water
Conservation Research Agenda to support public water supply utilities
and water managers in developing effective and efficient water
conservation programs. The workshop is being developed in collaboration
with the Conserve Florida Group (a consortium of representatives from
FDEP, all 5 Water Management Districts, Florida Water Utilities, and UF)
and other interested UF Faculty. Contact Lisette Staal ([log in to unmask]
) for more information.

5. UF Water Institute Strategic Plan

The Strategic Planning process, which included an online survey of
affiliated faculty in August 2006, a faculty retreat in October 2006,
and circulation of a draft Strategic Plan in May 2007, was completed in
August 2007 when the Faculty Advisory Committee approved the 2007-2010
UF Water Institute Strategic Plan . Go to
http://www.waterinstitute.ufl.edu/about/strategic.html for a copy of
both the full Strategic Plan and the Executive Summary.

Best Regards,

Wendy Graham
