"Social Network" was patented by Friendster in a 2003 application to
the US patent
office. I believe the patent was awarded in 2006.
Jonathan Abrams, CEO and Founder of Friendster, took the idea of
"social networking" from the old company
SixDegrees (which some of us might remember) which first used the
"online social network" in 1997 (before Clay Shirky). Andrew
was founder of SixDegrees. Weinreich was an early investor in
A number of people who first worked for VIsiblePath also had worked for
SixDegrees (which was sold in 2000 for lots of cash).
