As INSNA President, I have very pleased to announce that Joseph A. Cottam
and Andrew Lumsdaine from Indiana University have been selected as INSNA's
2008 winner of the Microsoft Prize. for their paper, "Extended Assortitivity
and the Structure in the Open Source Development Community". For their
efforts they will receive a check for $1,000. Also, the results of their
research will be disseminated through Microsoft's online channels.
Congratulations Joseph and Andrew!
This award has been made possible through a generous gift of $10,000 from
Microsoft to INSNA's general fund. This one time contribution is earmarked
to sponsor a competition for research on the social network structures of
software development. Half of the donation is earmarked for INSNA's
endowment. The $1,000 prize was for the best paper on the topic submitted
unsolicited for the 2008 conference. The competition will be repeated for
the 2009 Sunbelt Social Networks Conference, when the award will be $5,000.
I encourage those of you who are working in this area to submit a paper on
your research to Sunbelt for next year's conference. Further details will
be forthcoming. If this competition proves successful, Microsoft will
consider continuing the contribution on an annual basis.
Finally, I believe that Microsoft's contribution demonstrates its commitment
to supporting academic research and that it is ahead of other information
and communication companies in recognizing the significance of social
networking and its implications for the 21st century organization.
