SOS 4932/6932 Florida Lake Management
2 credits/Fall Semester
Wednesdays 7th and 8th period

This seminar- and field-based course provides students with an overview of management issues in Florida lakes including
(i)   Hydrology (water budget)
(ii)  Chemistry (nutrients, metals, organics, etc.)
(iii) Ecology (plants, animals)
(iv)  Watershed Management (land-use, restoration)

In addition to the instructors listed below, several distinguished guest experts from across UF and from State and Federal management agencies will provide lectures on course topics throughout the semester. In 2007, guest lectures were provided by scientists from St. Johns Water Management District, US Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Lakewatch, University of South Florida, and UF Departments of Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, Geological Sciences, and Geography.

Field trips in 2007 included the coastal dune lakes of Okaloosa County (Florida panhandle), Newnan's Lake (Gainesville), and the sand hill lakes of North Central Florida.

This course is intended for students interested in the interactions between humans and lake systems and should be of interest to agricultural, Earth, and environmental scientists and engineers, and natural resource managers.
