I finally discovered that if I highlight the person's name after "On
behalf of..." in the "From" line and hit "Reply," her/his email address
pops up in the "TO" line. YAY!

True: People are probably seeing different things depending on what
program they are using and what part of the screen they are looking at.
For example, on my school computer, running Outlook, I can see the
sender's email address in the "on behalf of" part of the From line--but
only in the upper part of the gray area that frames the message, not in
the message window. And when I log on at home, using Outlook but with
the options set for public access, I don't see the sender's address
anywhere.
Folks who prefer off-list replies can insert their signature files.

I guess we're all dealing with some technological differences. If I hit
the reply button, I only get the "Open Forum" address....nothing is
appended. If I hit the forward button, I get and empty "to" field.

another option that may work is to hit the forward or reply button.
Usually the email address appears, as Stefanie's does right below....
>>> "Hunt, Stefanie" <[log in to unmask]> 05/16/08 9:46 AM >>>
Grace --
Here's what I just did. I went to the "from" line in your original
message.... After "on behalf of Rhodes, Grace", I highlighted your name
and e-mail address. Then I hit the "reply" button, and pasted your
e-mail information into this message in the "to" line (I also moved the
"Open Forum" information to the cc line so I'm sending this to the
entire listserv, but I wouldn't do that if I wanted the message to go to
only you).
You're right...if the sender's individual e-mail address does not show,
you must respond to the entire list, but I don't recall ever seeing a
message without the individual e-mail address included in the "from"
line.
I hope if this helps.

My email system does not give me that option. For example, I'm replying
to this message and the "From" line says "Open Forum for Learning
Assistance Professionals" [mailto: etc.] "on Behalf Of Cooke, Winifred
B"
That's all. If the sender doesn't include her email address in the
message, my only option is to reply to the entire list. I wish it were
otherwise because so many senders don't include their own email
addresses.

Can I reply directly to the individual sending the message rather than
the listserve?
Not only can you reply directly to the individual, but listserve
etiquette<http://www.teachingcenter.ufl.edu/lrnasst.html#etiquette>
requires that you do so when the message is only useful or intended for
a single person. Otherwise, your personal response will be read by all
1200+ subscribers to the LRNASST-L listserve. This could not only be
embarrassing, but your message would also clog the listserve
unnecessarily. Remember that LRNASST-L, like most other academic
listserves, are public forums for discussion of issues that are of
professional interest, not a "chat" service.
To write a message to the individual who sent a message to the
listserve, do not use the "reply" feature of your email program.
Instead, look at the "from" line which should contain the individual's
email address. (Some programs allow you to directly click on this
person's email address to open a new message, while others will only
give you the text to copy.) Copy this email address, open a new email
message, and type in the individual's email address.

A couple of listers have mentioned a 'private reply' option. Is that
something available through lrnasst in some way, or is that a function
of certain email systems? If it's a lrnasst option, could someone
please post the directions for a private reply? Thanks.
