Hi friends

 

We launched our online tutor training site this fall with modest success. Our training site is currently housed within our online platform, WebTycho (similar to Blackboard and WebCT). I currently have the following "training" options on the site:

 

□        Videos (of me!) of the "live" Orientation to Tutoring  - this is in segments to allow tutors to view each component and then respond to reflective questions on what our platform calls Conferences (threaded discussions). I also have an evaluation form that is used for each component of the training. 

 

□        PowerPoint presentations with annotated notes per slide that are also tied directly to reflective questions in the Conference section (and the evaluation)

 

□       Study Groups are set up that allow discipline specific discussions between tutors. We are an urban, commuter campus and our center is not really conducive for our tutors to tutor here at the same time. Space is not as abundant as I’d prefer. 

 

□       Webliography of links to many resources across the world that can support the tutors (CRLA, NTA, ATP, NADE, etc.)

 

□       Copies of important paperwork so they always have access if we’re not physically open

 

 

While I completely prefer the face2face option, this alternative has allowed new tutors (we hire throughout the semester to meet our ongoing needs) to take advantage of the live trainings they may have missed. Here is how our training program works:

 

1.                   Student is hired based on CRLA certification (grade in course, GPA, faculty referral, interview)

2.                  Student is given our tutor manual to review

3.                  If the student is hired prior to the start of a new semester they are invited to attend the Orientation to Tutoring, a 4 hour training (it will be 6 hours in the fall) that includes:

a.       Ice breaker that helps to build a sense of community

b.      Learning Styles information

c.       Communication Styles information

d.      The Tutoring Cycle (we rely heavily on this concept)

e.       Video from the NC State series and discussion

f.        Review of the manual

g.       (with returning tutors) a discussion of policies and procedures

h.       Role playing information

4.                  If the student is hired during the semester the following is done instead:

a.       The tutor reviews the manual individually and then meets with me for about 1 hour to review the important components of the manual and discuss their roles and responsibilities of tutoring

b.      The tutor is provided a copy of the NC State DVD to watch the first segment either in our center or at home

c.       The tutor uses the online training site to complete three of our mandated trainings:

                                                               i.      Learning Styles

                                                             ii.      The Tutoring Cycle

                                                            iii.      Communication Styles

 

I encourage the use of the online training site primarily for students who cannot attend my live trainings and that is many due to the nature of our population. I find it interesting to learn that CRLA has a policy about online training when more and more schools are not only adding online courses to their curriculum but also tutoring centers are starting to increase online tutoring options. I’d be interested to learn what CRLA decides in regards to the ration of live trainings to online.

Hello fellow listers:

At SUNY Plattsburgh we have trouble meeting our "modest" goal of all of our
tutors (we had 234 student employees this past semester with an estimated
144 students returning in the fall) achieving CRLA Level I certification.  I
am working on a spreadsheet to track the courses our current tutors did well
in so we can meet requests for courses from within our ranks and limit the
number of new tutors we hire in the fall.

We do realize that a large part of our problem with CRLA certification is
the number of students we employ.  We also acknowledge that many of our
tutors simply cannot attend the Tutor Training course to become a content
tutor.  All Writing Tutors must complete ENG390 before beginning to tutor; a
policy we cannot equally enforce with our content tutors as we often receive
requests for tutors in new courses after the Tutor Training course has begun
or run (it is only 5 weeks long and starts the second week of each
semester).  Those content tutors who cannote complete the Tutor Training
course are required to meet with the Grad Assistant for a two-hour overview,
mostly policies and procedures with some discussion of tutoring strategies.

To address the problem with training, we are considered online training
modules.  We are aware that CRLA limits the number of online training ours
that will count towards certification and we will stay within those limits,
but we want to make sure that our online training provides the best possible
alternative experience for our tutors.  Especially as many would be able to
achieve CRLA Level I certification by attending the two hour overview,
attending the required six hours of staff meetings (which we calculate to
equal two hours of CRLA training as we do mini-training exercises during the
meetings, i.e. Learning Style Inventories and discussions, sticky
situations, etc.), and completing the maximum number of three online
training hours CRLA allows each semester (or so I have been informed).

So after that long-winded explanation, comes my request.  Do any of you use
online training modules?  And if so, would you be willing to share your
advice/experiences with such training?  Sample modules if available would
also be much appreciated.
