John,
It seems at first that having the Counseling Center administer
accommodated exams would be simpler. On the other hand, what you're
doing is perfectly appropriate for a comprehensive learning assistance
center like your Center for Academic Excellence, don't you think?
Viewed from the faculty perspective, a counseling center situated in
student affairs that advocates for students and "supports" students in
sometimes undefined ways may not be the best place to administer
academic exams. At two of the three institutions I know best, faculty
are justifiably suspicious of the "help" students might receive at the
counseling center. What a credit to your learning center that the
counselors trust you to provide student-centered service, and
simultaneously the faculty trust you to administer the tests as they
want it done.
Kudos to you for clarifying and streamlining the process at Pace
University. Clearly, you're the one who should do this, because you
will. And you make your own Center that much more vital to your
institution.

>At Pace University, the Counseling Center hires note-takers and others for in-class assistance. My overall unit, the Center for Academic Excellence, schedules and proctors accommodated exams. Until recently, our Administrative Staff Associate for the CAE coordinated the scheduling and proctoring. But because she didn't feel qualified to do this and it was not in her job description, she lobbied for someone else to take it over. The Counseling Center would not offer to take it over. So, I have agreed to temporarily take it over. I see my role as bringing leadership and responsibility by general oversight and streamlining the processes for scheduling and proctoring. Until now, the processes have been rather unclear to us, the students, and the faculty. So, I hope to standardize the process and thereby make clear what it is students and faculty are to do, as well as what we will do. I have hired a part-time Coordinator, who is a doctoral student in the Psy.D. program t!
