Dear colleagues,
Does anyone know whether there is some kind of formal (academic) definition of the term “social media” and probably even a classification approach in order to structure this vast area?
I certainly have some sort of understanding what the term implies and that it summarizes applications such as blogs, social networking sites (e.g. Facebook), Wikis, content sharing platforms (e.g. YouTube) and so on. But given that I tend to have more and more frequent discussions about the topic in the classroom, I was wondering whether there is any kind of academic paper that has formally defined the term and provided some form of classification for the long list of applications that may be subsumed within this group.
Any comments would be very much appreciated.
I will post a summary of all responses to the list in a couple of days time,
Thanks very much for your help in advance,
Regards,
Michael
