Our study skills videos, produced in-house, have gone through a few
evolutions (mutations?). Two or three years ago, we had them copied to DVDs
which we checked out to students. We kept the videotapes for a while, but I
think they've been ditched by now, along with our VHS players. More
recently, we had the DVDs converted to streaming video and linked to our
website, but because of copyright concerns (e.g., some of the instructors on
the videos are no longer at the college), they can only be accessed from
computers in our lab, not elsewhere. This has eliminated the labor
associated with check-out. We have no way of tracking usage, but I know
that students still view these videos, even though they're rather old (from
the 90s). This is primarily because some instructors give extra credit for
either attending live workshops or viewing recorded ones. We publicize both
live and recorded workshops in our general brochure and mention them in our
many class orientation tours early in the semester.
We also used to have foreign language videos which were hardly ever viewed.
We gave them the heave-ho several years ago. I think it's good to get rid
of outdated equipment and media whenever possible -- there's always
something else you can do with the space.
