At Monroe Community College, we offer two college success courses.
More than 10 years ago, we developed a one credit college success course called College Orientation Seminar. The title suggests that it is a "seminar", but in fact, we have as many as 32 students per section. As students changed and technology increased, we realized that one credit (< 15 hours) was insufficient.
In spring 08, MCC offered a new three credit course, Introduction to College Studies, COS 133. The faculty and student response to COS 133 has been outstanding. COS 133 faculty have sufficient time to cover more topics, in-depth. For the same reason, students prefer COS 133 as well. Students are engaged learning about academics, MCC resources and activities, campus community, and about themselves, as college students. As an aside, I have a student auditing my COS 133 section after having taken COS 101. He simply felt that he wanted to learn more!
We have found the title Introduction to College Studies has both an academic and positive tone that attracts students, faculty, and administrators.
