HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Drop Deadline (NEW POSTING):
The deadline to drop a class is Friday, April 10 at 5:00pm. You can pick up the form in the Registrar's Office, your college advising office or online at http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/pdf/schedulechange.pdf

To drop a course, you must take the drop form to your college's advising office (Honors advisors cannot sign drop forms). For your college advising office location, visit http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/soc/advisers.html

You have a limited number of drops at UF. Generally, you have two drops for your first sixty hours attempted at UF (not including incoming credit brought in through AP/IB) and two drops in upper-division. Hence it is not a good idea to use a drop lightly, as you may need it another semester in a true emergency.

Many people, including medical schools, recommend not dropping a course if you are earning a "C" or higher.

2.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Beta Kappa (NEW POSTING):
Tapped to join Phi Beta Kappa? Don't just toss the invitation into the trash, thinking this is one more solicitation for your hard-earned cash. Getting selected for this honorary is a great accomplishment and recognized by grad schools, law and med schools as meaning you are among the very best students liberal arts majors at your school. It is especially an honor to be selected as a junior. Phi Beta Kappa will be noted on your transcript and will make a very nice line on your resume. This honorary also has some scholarship money for grad school, etc., so if you are a member take a look at their national website to see what is available. www.pbk.org ; UF chapter: www.honors.ufl.edu/pbk

3.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Dr. Kevin Knudson appointed as Director of the Honors Program:
Dr. Kevin Knudson has been appointed to serve as Director of the Honors Program at the University of Florida, effective June 30, 2009.

Dr. Knudson is a member of Mississippi State University's mathematics and statistics faculty. He has served as acting director of the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State since 2008. Prior to that, he served as associate director of the honors college. He has also directed the Mississippi State Honors Undergraduate Research Program and the Distinguished Scholars Program.

Dr. Knudson completed his doctorate in mathematics in 1996 at Duke University and received his M.S. and B.S. in mathematics from Virginia Tech. in 1991. His research interests include computational topology, discrete Morse theory, homology of linear groups, algebraic K-theory, and equivariant topology.

4.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Design the 2009-2010 Honors Student Planner:
The Honors Program is looking for creative people to design the next cover for the student planner of 2009-2010. There are no real strict guidelines, although we would prefer something that shows the uniqueness and diversity of the Honors Program in addition to, of course, something about the Gators!

The only true requirements for the planner cover are the following:
-	The image should be of dimensions 5" x 7.9375", although it can extend 5.5" x 8.4375", but anything past 5" x 7.9375" will be cut off.
-	The image should be digital, and in, preferably, .psd format. JPEG will be accepted, but please do not compress the images. Please, no Word documents.

The winner of this cover contest will win a $30 gift certificate from the University of Florida Bookstore, lunch with the Honors Program Staff and a complimentary copy of the 2009-10 planner. Questions regarding entries may be directed to [log in to unmask]
Entries are due at the Honors Program office on April 10. Good luck!

To learn more about the rights of women in Islam, join ACCENT, Islam On Campus, and keynote speaker Dr. Jamillah Karim for "Gender Equity in Islam: The Elevated Status of Women".

Copies of Dr. Karim's book, "Muslim Women: Negotiating Race, Class, and Gender within the Ummah" will be available for purchase. There will also be a FREE BOOK SIGNING after!

This event is taking place on Thursday, April 2 at 8:00pm in Touchdown Terrace, Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Doors open at 7:30pm.
