HONORS OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Jared Diamond (TODAY):
Dr. Jared Diamond will speak about his latest book, "Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed," at 8:00pm this Thursday April 9 at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets for the general public will be available Thursday beginning at noon from the Phillips Center Box Office.

Additionally, Dr. Diamond will be available for an hour long question-and-answer period in the Ustler Hall Atrium at 5:00pm on Thursday. Please take advantage of this special opportunity to hear from a Pulitzer Prize winning author!

2.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Design the 2009-2010 Honors Student Planner:
The Honors Program is looking for creative people to design the next cover for the student planner of 2009-2010. There are no real strict guidelines, although we would prefer something that shows the uniqueness and diversity of the Honors Program in addition to, of course, something about the Gators!

The only true requirements for the planner cover are the following:
-	The image should be of dimensions 5" x 7.9375", although it can extend 5.5" x 8.4375", but anything past 5" x 7.9375" will be cut off.
-	The image should be digital, and in, preferably, .psd format. JPEG will be accepted, but please do not compress the images. Please, no Word documents.

The winner of this cover contest will win a $30 gift certificate from the University of Florida Bookstore, lunch with the Honors Program Staff and a complimentary copy of the 2009-10 planner. Questions regarding entries may be directed to [log in to unmask]
Entries are due at the Honors Program office on April 10. Good luck!

3.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Drop Deadline:
The deadline to drop a class is Friday, April 10 at 5:00pm. You can pick up the form in the Registrar's Office, your college advising office or online at http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/pdf/schedulechange.pdf

To drop a course, you must take the drop form to your college's advising office (Honors advisors cannot sign drop forms). For your college advising office location, visit http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/soc/advisers.html

You have a limited number of drops at UF. Generally, you have two drops for your first sixty hours attempted at UF (not including incoming credit brought in through AP/IB) and two drops in upper-division. Hence it is not a good idea to use a drop lightly, as you may need it another semester in a true emergency.

Many people, including medical schools, recommend not dropping a course if you are earning a "C" or higher.

HONORS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENTS

4.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Student Organization of the Year (NEW POSTING):
The Student Honors Organization has been honored by IDEAL as the Student Organization of the Year! Please share in SHO's great recognition, and many congratulations go out to the executive board for putting on such a fantastic series of programs all year long!

5.	ANNOUNCEMENT: SHO Officer Elections:
Elections for the 2009-2010 SHO Officer Board are taking place from Wednesday, April 8 until Friday, April 10 at 11:59pm. Visit the SHO website at www.honors.ufl.edu/sho to check out the candidate profiles and vote!
